The position

ILGA World has the honour of hosting the Secretariat of the Equal Rights Coalition (ERC).

The Secretariat is an independent body, accountable to the ERC Executive Committee and hosted by ILGA World. It supports and reports to the ERC Member States and civil society co-chairs through the Executive Committee as the main governance body of the ERC. Its’ role is to support and facilitate interaction among Coalition member states, other affiliated international and regional bodies, and civil society engagement in the ERC.

We are seeking an Officer to join the ERC Secretariat team for an initial period of 18 months with a possible extension after this time. The Officer is accountable to the ERC Secretariat Manager and is an integral part of the first Secretariat of the ERC with an opportunity to shape its future.

The Officer will support the work of the Secretariat to ensure good governance, emphasising participation, effective communications, planning and organisation to build the next generation of the Coalition. The Officer will actively provide support on an ongoing basis to the wide range of ERC governance bodies, the ERC thematic working groups providing an important link between member states, civil society representatives and international organisations part of the Coalition.

Responsibilities

The Equal Rights Coalition Secretariat Officer reports to the Equal Rights Coalition Manager in the delivery of the ERC Secretariat responsibilities including by:

  • Attending all ERC leadership, thematic working group meetings and periodic events to support ongoing programme delivery
  • Coordinating internal and external communications with a range of ERC bodies including the member state and civil society co-chairs, the executive committee, the thematic working groups, and the coordinating committee ensuring key information and decision-making opportunities are shared
  • Developing and regularly updating the ERC website as a key platform for both internal and external purposes
  • Developing and implementing activities that strengthen and support participation of a cross section of member state, civil society, regional, and international actors in the work of the ERC
  • Supporting the logistics, organisation, and delivery of a global convening of ERC bodies to review the ERC strategy and implementation plan and to develop its future action
  • Supporting the organisation and delivery of ad hoc convenings, workshops, and learning events at the instance of the co-chairs and the thematic working groups
  • Actively supporting a range of ERC bodies to carry out their duties including by scheduling regular meetings, recording and sharing of meeting records, maintaining membership and participation lists, and maintaining the ERC archive
  • Coordinating the timely provision of services by interpreters and translators to ensure participants can work in the three languages of the Coalition (English, French, and Spanish).
  • Contributing to other ERC deliverables, including
    • Publishing and promoting a calendar of events
    • Drafting quarterly donor reports
    • Monitoring the Secretariat budget & workplan
    • Ensure compliance against donor agreement.

More generally

  • Actively contribute to promoting and achieving the ERC’s objectives
  • Ensure that all activities are carried out with full regard to ILGA World policies
  • Work as a part of the ILGA World staff team
  • Perform other related duties as required

Relationships with colleagues

ILGA values creative and inclusive approaches to work and management and the participation of staff at all levels in the organisation. Staff have line management arrangements and specific key relationships, which are detailed in their job descriptions, but they will also need to work collaboratively with their colleagues to achieve their agreed targets and outcomes to the required standards.

Performance of duties, remunerations, and benefits

  • ILGA World is currently introducing a flexible workplace regime – under the new rules, this position can be implemented remotely and does not require relocation to Geneva, Switzerland
  • The position is advertised as a full-time position of 37.5 hours for a 5-day week.
  • ILGA World remunerates under a three-tiered salary matrix structure. The annual full-time salary offered is competitive for this level of responsibility and will depend on location
  • ILGA World offers 35 days between legal holidays and annual leave and contributions to health care costs
  • ILGA World operates under a flexible working system, including flexible working hours.

Requirements

The successful candidate should be strongly committed to working for human rights and equality, and have competencies and demonstrated experience in the following areas:

Project management: proven ability to effectively manage projects and/or global events, using project planning tools, allocating roles and responsibilities to ensure timely delivery and meeting objectives.

Communications skills: demonstrated experience in global, cross-cultural, and sensitive communications using a range of media and in website development.

Global partnership: demonstrated experience working in global partnerships or in supporting similar organisational set-ups — for example as part of a coalition, a secretariat, an alliance.

Collaboration and prioritisation: experience working in collaboration with different stakeholders and prioritising work based on pressing needs.

Working remotely: An understanding of the demands and responsibilities of working independently as part of a small remote team.

Education and qualifications

  • A university degree or equivalent work experience in a relevant area such as human rights, gender studies, international relations

Experience

  • Five years relevant and qualifying experience in coordinating an international project or process with multiple partners and/or supporting the membership of a secretariat, coalition, or alliance.
  • Demonstrated experience working in multicultural and international programmes in civil society organisations
  • Coordinating and supporting reporting on large budgets and grants partnerships
  • Working with national governments on addressing human rights actors and issues
  • Experience working closely with and supporting LGBTQI+ – led organisations and groups, particularly in the Global South.

Technical requirements

  • In using online communications tools, ideally with website and content development experience.
  • Working and building internal communications systems to support a variety of stakeholders including member organisations, governments, multilateral institutions, and allied civil society movements

Other requirements

  • Ability to work in proficient English and Spanish (mandatory), ideally also in French
  • Adherence to, and alignment with, the ILGA World Code of Conduct
