Title: Ethical Fundraising Communication Contractor
Duty station: Home-based
Section/Unit: PSP/Supporter Engagement Section
Contract type: Individual Contractor (retainer)
Type: Project-based (part-time)
Duration: Maximum 80 working days.
1. General Background
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect and assist refugees and other persons of concern. The Private Sector Partnerships Service (PSP) sits within UNHCR’s Division of External Relations (DER) and is responsible for mobilizing resources for refugees from the private sector. UNHCR has a fundraising strategy in place for 2018-2025.
2. Purpose and scope of the assignment
PSP’s Supporter Engagement Section is recruiting a contractor to co-lead a pilot and facilitate the production of fundraising communication material developed by refugees by applying the contributor centred methodology.
This pilot is designed to test new communications and fundraising techniques which follow the UNHCR ethical communications guidelines recommendations, to discover how donor audiences respond to fundraising communication materials created using a contributor-focused, participant-led process.
What this project will seek to ask is what happens if UNHCR decides to approach their story gathering and telling in partnership with those who are more commonly the story ‘subjects’. Core questions: how does it feel for people forced to flee to be able to control their story? What are the practical steps we need to take to facilitate this at scale across UNHCR?
This pilot therefore is designed to test a new methodology called Contributor Centred Storytelling (CCS). CCS is a process rooted in participatory story production ways of working. The project hopes to develop this process for UNHCR to take this forward as a refugee-led fundraising communication production method in the future.
The pilot is also designed to discover how audiences respond to fundraising materials created using a contributor-focused, participant-led process.
What this project will seek to ask is what happens if an organisation decided to approach their story gathering and telling with participation and shared editorial decision-making with story ‘subjects’ as an objective: How would this impact their appeals? And how do you measure the impact of a different approach: increased donations or an improvement in the perceptions of distant others?
This pilot will take place in one location but will be built as a model that maybe amended and replicated going in other locations.
