Director’s Office – Communications & Public Engagement
Olympia, Washington – Thurston County

This position may be eligible for telework.  The default assigned work location of all WDFW positions – both on-site and telework-eligible positions – are within the State of Washington.   Frequency of onsite work will vary based on business and operational needs.

Are you experienced in organizing different types of outreach events for stakeholders and the community?

In this role, you will organize participation, conduct stakeholder research, and manage logistics for sports/trade shows, community events/festivals, public meetings, and other events across the state.

Picture yourself developing presentations and supporting materials for community outreach activities.

You thrive on building collaboration and teamwork, working closely with program and regional staff to ensure all materials are ordered and organized for each event.

You are excited to attend sports shows, trade shows, outdoor industry events, and other meetings and gatherings to set up booths and distribute information about the Department and its mission.

Duties

Here is some of what you will be doing:

Event Coordination & Outreach Support: 

  • Identify key audiences for WDFW outreach efforts and help manage the Department’s public engagement tracker.
  • Analyze needs and opportunities to expand WDFW outreach activities and participate in planning and executing the team’s outreach and communication activities to support WDFW’s 25-Year Strategic Plan.
  • Coordinate events by engaging with the Department’s programs and regions to facilitate participation in sports shows and other community events.
  • Facilitate internal and external requests for event staffing and support.

Administrative Support: 

  • In collaboration with team, identify needs for outreach materials and coordinate with Contracts and Fiscal staff to make purchases on behalf of Communications and Public Engagement using Department Purchasing card.
  • Maintain outreach supplies inventory app on SharePoint to support Department staff in getting resources for events.
  • Facilitate live events via Microsoft Teams or Zoom.
  • Manage Public Engagement SharePoint page.

Social Media & Multimedia Coordination:

  • Contribute to monthly Weekender newsletter for anglers, hunters, and wildlife enthusiasts. Use newsletter content to develop social media posts.
  • Promote events and public engagement opportunities on WDFW social media platforms.
  • Create content highlighting WDFW staff at outreach and public engagement event.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Fast-paced, deadline-oriented job.
    • Some outdoors activity required, which includes walking and standing/sitting outdoors on uneven surfaces.
    • May require some bending and minimal lifting (up to 20 pounds) occasionally.
  • Schedule:
    • 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
    • Some weekend and evening work is required.
    • Telework options may be available – minimum of 20% in-person work is required.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Occasional in- and out-of-state travel is required.
    • Overnight travel required.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Standard office equipment.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • WDFW staff, stakeholders, event staff, vendors, general public, and community partners.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, marketing, public administration, natural resources, or related field.

And

  • Minimum of three years of professional or volunteer experience in community outreach, project or event management, communications, or closely related field.

License:

  • Valid driver’s license or ability to travel.

Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and work in multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in project management.
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Experience working independently and interacting with the public without direct supervision.
  • Proficient in the use of standard office equipment, including a computer and office telephone system, and all Microsoft Office software programs.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
In addition to the required qualifications above, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Understanding of the operation of Washington state government and experience working with state agencies and local governments.
  • Familiarity with natural resource and outdoor recreation issues in Washington state.
  • Multilingual language capabilities.
  • Experience with video, photography, and multimedia editing programs.
  • Experience creating accessible content for people with disabilities.
  • Experience planning and hosting in-person and virtual events.
