Overview:

The Brodhead Watershed Association (BWA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and improving water resources and the environment in the Brodhead and Cherry Creek watersheds.

The Executive Director will work with the office administrator, the BWA board, and its membership in support of the organization’s mission, objectives, and bylaws as defined by the board. As the Executive Director, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our operations and ensuring the successful implementation of our strategic goals.

This position would be great for someone who:

  • has a passion for conservation with an interest in environmental issues as BWA’s mission is driven by science-based education, outreach, and advocacy on a local level throughout our watershed;
  • has a collaborative spirit as environmental challenges often require collaboration across sectors and disciplines. A candidate who can work well with others, build partnerships, and foster cooperation would be an asset;
  • has effective communication skills as outreach is essential for raising awareness about environmental issues, advocating for change, and engaging with key stakeholders in the community;
  • has the ability to inspire and mobilize others towards a common goal which includes skills in strategic planning and decision-making;
  • demonstrates ethical integrity and a commitment to transparency and accountability in their work and can easily adapt to changing circumstances.

Overall, a great candidate for BWA would be someone who combines a deep passion for environmental conservation with the skills, expertise, and values needed to drive meaningful change.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Board Governance:

  • Coordinate and communicate effectively with the Board of Directors and provide, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Prepare agendas and provide supporting documents as necessary to execute full board meetings and executive committee meetings.

Financial Performance and Viability:

  • Responsible for fiscal management that operates within the approved budget and ensures maximum resource utilization in a positive financial position.
  • Ensure that all financial record-keeping and reporting is compliant with regulations, accountable, and transparent.
  • Work with the treasurer and finance committee to prepare annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Drive a coordinated development strategy and directly cultivate and solicit donations.
  • Coordinate with the president and secretary of the Board of Directors, to conduct official correspondence of the organization and execute legal documents in relation to all financial matters.
  • Serve as one of two signatory on checks as per BWA policy.

Community Outreach and Strategic Planning:

  • Provide leadership and support to ensure that that mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning, and community outreach.
  • Oversee implementation of BWA programs that carry out the organization’s mission. Ongoing programs included but are not limited to; the Native Plant Sale, Stream Watchers, and Get Outdoors Poconos.
  • Implement strategic planning to ensure that BWA can successfully fulfill its Mission into the future. Including but not limited to; serving as the primary representative to grant funding partners and preparing grant applications as approved by the Board of Directors.
  • Maintain and enhance the image of BWA by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for BWA in regards to all media requests, and official statements on issues.

Organizational Operations:

  • Execute the recruitment, employment, and release of all personnel, including paid staff, volunteers, and independent contractors.
  • Ensure effective administration of all BWA polices and standard operating procedures.
  • Oversee preparation of communication and promotional materials. Including but not limited to; press releases, newsletter, promotional, educational materials, annual report, annual appeal and website content.
  • Oversee developmental strategies. Including but not limited to; donor development, membership, and fundraising including donor stewardship, new donor and member recruitment, donor and fundraising events, fundraising programs.
  • Serve as primary signatory for all agreements, and contracts entered into and on behalf of the organization.  Execute, administer and manage all grant funded projects, including all third party contractors in regards to grant projects.
  • Ensure BWA compliance with employer requirements, insurances and other governance matters.

Other related tasks and duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Management experience preferred
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership
  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making and reporting
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, program development and task facilitation
  • Ability to convey a vision of BWA’s strategic future to staff, board, volunteers and donors
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector
  • Skills to collaborate with and motivate board members and other volunteers
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups including donors, members, landowners, members of the general public, federal, county, state, and municipal officials, and conservation partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee and collaborate with staff
  • Strong public speaking ability
  • Availability and willingness to work a flexible schedule requiring occasional evening and weekend participation in meetings or events.
  • Experience with QuickBooks preferred but not required.
  • Must be a team player and willing to work collaboratively.
