Middlesex Land Trust Executive Director Position

Position Overview:
The Middlesex Land Trust (“Trust”), a regional land trust serving northern Middlesex County, Connecticut since 1987 and currently stewarding over fifty preserves and properties (1300 acres), is seeking its first, full time Executive Director (“ED”) to continue its legacy of land preservation and grow the organization. The new ED will report to the Officers and Board of the Trust and will be expected to work a 40-hour week, with some of those hours to include several evenings per month to accommodate meetings with Board members, Committee members, potential donors, and others. It is expected there will be a limited period of overlap between the new full-time ED and the current part-time ED to ensure a smooth transition of the many functions and activities of the Trust.

Key Responsibilities:
The ED will have multiple responsibilities and goals, including:

  • Assisting in developing the long-term strategies of the Trust
  • Pursuing membership growth and fundraising, including grant writing
  • Effective donor development and communications
  • Land acquisition and landowner relations (including the Trust’s long term successful collaboration with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and other conservation organizations)
  • Effective land management and stewardship (in conjunction with the Stewardship Committee)
  • Board meeting preparation and communications
  • Fiscal management (in conjunction with the Finance Committee)
  • Assisting in the development and updating of Trust policies and procedures
  • Effective office administration and daily operations.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

  • Leadership experience
  • Non-profit experience
  • Real estate or land trust acquisition experience or experience as an environmental professional
  • A degree in business, law, environmental science or other relevant field
  • Fiscal management experience
  • Highly effective written and oral communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of effective public relations, marketing, or fundraising
  • Project management experience
  • Organized, self-motivated and an effective time manager
  • Capacity to recruit and supervise additional staff as growth and resources allow
  • Experience working with volunteers and a commitment to engaging with a diverse constituency.

A comprehensive background and credit check will be required.

Compensation: Expected to be in the $80,000 to $100,000 range commensurate with experience; additional benefits include paid holidays, vacation, and funded Health Savings Account.
