About Missoula Mountain Bike Coalition

Missoula Mountain Bike Coalition (MMBC) is a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and expanding mountain biking opportunities in Missoula and the surrounding region through trail building, stewardship, advocacy, and community outreach. We seek an Executive Director (“ED”) with a passion for trails, cycling, and community service to lead the organization forward. MMBC’s personnel includes two full-time and one season staff, a committed Board of Directors, and many active volunteers.

Position Summary 

The ED is the organization’s chief staff leader and primary public representative. This role oversees day‑to‑day operations, staff supervision, financial stewardship, fundraising, partnership development, advocacy and policy review, and public relations. The ED will work closely with an engaged Board of Directors to maintain organizational sustainability and to expand MMBC’s impact on trail design, construction, stewardship, and community relations.

Key Responsibilities 

Operations & Administration (≈30%)

• Manage the staff team
• Update the existing strategic plan
• Oversee all operational and financial activities, ensuring solvency and responsible use of funds; monitor monthly cash flow and report to the Board.
• Make and implement personnel decisions in accordance with applicable law and organizational policies.
• Manage the CRM and ensure accurate membership and donor records.
• Plan and facilitate Board meetings; serve as the primary organizational contact for staff, partners, and the public.

Development (≈30%)

• Serve as the primary fundraiser and fundraising coordinator to secure organizational sustainability.
• Lead the implementation of the fundraising strategy with support from the Board and Fundraising Committee.
• Cultivate and retain corporate sponsors, major donors, and membership growth.
• Identify and pursue grant opportunities for trail development and maintenance.
• Set and meet membership growth goals in coordination with the Fundraising Committee.

Community Liaison & Advocacy (≈25%)

• Build and maintain collaborative relationships with government agencies, land managers, community partners, and other stakeholders.
• Act as MMBC’s spokesperson and public representative at events and in the media.
• Promote a positive image of mountain biking across the community.
• Oversee web and social media communications.
• Participate in relevant land‑management planning processes and develop briefs, talking points, and fact sheets on public policy issues affecting MMBC.
• Facilitate collaborative planning among diverse stakeholders and trail user groups.

Field Programs (≈15%)

• Identify and develop opportunities to expand and improve Missoula’s trail network.
• Provide visionary oversight of the trails program and work closely with the Field Programs Manager.

Required Skills & Experience

• Minimum 3 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, natural or recreation resource management, public administration, or a closely related field.
• Experience with fundraising, sales, or equivalent financial relationship creation.
• Experience building and maintaining stakeholder and partner relationships.
• Proven managerial and project management experience.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking and writing for publication.
• Professional tact and the ability to respond respectfully to public inquiries and stakeholder concerns.
• Willingness to work some evenings and weekends for events and during the field season.
• A positive attitude and a passion for mountain biking and trails‑based recreation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Management experience, including staff supervision
• Experience in advocacy at the state and/or federal level.
• Experience working in the Mountain West with knowledge of the regional recreation and conservation political landscape.
• Familiarity with sustainable, mountain‑bike specific, and multi‑use trail design principles.
• Experience supervising staff and volunteers in a trail or land‑management context.
• Financial literacy, including the ability to analyze financial reports and HR documents.

Physical demands 

• Ability to work 10+ hours on occasional basis
• Ability to perform trail work: using hand tools to dig, repeated lifting of up to 50 lbs,
• Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions

Capacity to lead mountain biking outings, including in high‑alpine terrain, and hike on steep slopes
