ABOUT US

Founded in 1987 by Oklahoma oilman and philanthropist Sam K.
Viersen, Jr., the Sam Viersen Family Foundation is focused
primarily on serving the needs of Okmulgee and Tulsa Counties. The
foundation board is made up of family and Okmulgee community
members. The goal of the foundation is to meet basic human
needs—defined as food, shelter, and basic education—and help
dependent people obtain independence. Qualified nonreligious
educational, charitable, cultural, and scientific organizations are
invited to apply for annual grants—and Okmulgee County high school
students may apply for annual scholarships—through our website via
the application portal.

JOB SUMMARY

The executive director is responsible for understanding,
interpreting, and advancing the mission of the Sam Viersen Family
Foundation. The overarching requirement of the job is to evaluate
grant-seeking nonprofits and ensure they fit within the parameters
of the foundation’s mission. The position also requires an ability
to search for and identify other qualified nonprofits with a
demonstrable need for help and encourage them to apply. The
executive director assists nonprofit organizations during the grant
application process, distributes grant and scholarship awards based
on board directives, facilitates networking among grantees,
represents the foundation at various meetings and social functions
throughout the year, and interfaces directly with nonprofit
directors and community partners based largely in Okmulgee and
Tulsa Counties. With the outward-facing nature of this position,
excellent verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills
are essential.

The executive director acts as a liaison between the foundation
board and grantees. Responsibilities to the board include monthly
check-ins with senior board members, quarterly updates with the
full board, and subcommittee meeting attendance, particularly when
capital projects arise. The executive director hosts the board
annually to introduce members to grantees, view donations in
action, and meet with new and prospective grant applicants. They
are also responsible for creating an annual grant request book for
board members to review. Strong budgeting skills will be helpful in
this role as there is a mix of both long-term and short-term grant
commitments to consider. This is a part-time, hybrid position.
