Executive Director, Corporate Engagement Center

POSITION OBJECTIVE

In collaboration with the senior associate vice president of institutional partnerships and impact philanthropy, the executive director, corporate engagement center will provide fundraising leadership in implementing the university-wide Corporate Relations fundraising program.  This individual will also lead the activities of the university’s new Corporate Engagement Center, which serves as the coordinating body of Case Western Reserve University’s corporate engagement at all levels of the university, including research, talent pipeline development, and philanthropy.

As the leader of the Corporate Engagement Center, the executive director works collaboratively with the senior vice president of university relations and development, senior vice president for research and technology management, leadership of the Weatherhead School of Management, the Career Center, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of the President to develop effective corporate partnerships for academic program development and expansion, investment pathways and pipelines to meet employment demand, and the advancement of problem-solving research. The executive director builds a culture of collaboration and trust with an understanding of internal and external colleagues’ goals and identifying appropriate opportunities for support and partnership.

The executive director maintains a portfolio of corporate donors and partners, spending focused time on relationship building activities that will lead to securing research, talent, and philanthropic partnerships of $5,000,000+ This position oversees the creation and execution of research, talent, and philanthropic strategies aimed at a group of high-level corporations. These strategies focus on expanding corporate resources to the university, managing the university’s research, talent, and philanthropic relationships with corporations, developing corporate support for programmatic areas to meet the needs and desires of the university community. This position works collaboratively with staff and faculty to develop and identify programs and develop agreements for corporate research, talent, and philanthropic support to the university.

The executive director manages a team of three development professionals and leads the operational activities the university’s Corporate Engagement Center, which integrates, coordinates, and provides metrics on corporate engagements, as well as serving as the primary point of contact for corporate partners.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop a portfolio of corporate partners with research, talent, and philanthropic potential of 5,000,000+. Develop and implement strategic research, talent, and engagement strategies for assigned corporate prospects to maximize raising private support to the university. (35%)
  • In collaboration with campus partners, develop and implement the Corporate Engagement Center’s relationship management strategies for key corporate partners to achieve outcomes in research, talent, and philanthropy. Coordinate the university’s relationships with businesses, industry leaders, and other entities seeking access to Case Western Reserve University resources and forge strategic partnerships. (35%)
  • Oversee all aspects of the Corporate Engagement Center, including, among other functions, marketing, administration (agreements), inbound inquiries, visits, and operations (budget, staffing, facility). Create and implement policy, strategy, and direction for the Corporate Engagement Center and ensure all procedures, goals, and initiatives undertaken by the team are consistent with and in support of the goals and strategic initiatives for the university as set by the trustees, president, provost, senior vice president for university relations and development, and senior associate vice president.     NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers as appropriate, who will actively participate in developing research and talent pipelines, as well as the soliciting of philanthropic gifts of all levels. Partner with volunteers to engage and cultivate individuals with leadership authority in corporations to further corporate engagement support of 5,000,000+ to the university. (5%)
  • Serve as a member of the senior development staff and assist with the development and implementation of program strategies and overall departmental development plans to fulfill the mission of the university. (5%)

    CONTACTS

    Department: Daily contact with the senior associate vice president, executive directors, senior directors, directors and other department and university relations and development staff as required to perform essential functions.

    University: Daily contact with the president’s office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.

    External: Contact with trustees, alumni, donors, friends of the university, vendors and volunteers as required to perform essential functions.

    Students: Contact with students as required to perform essential functions.

     

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

    Direct supervision of director of corporate relations and strategic projects, assistant director of corporate relations and strategic projects, and corporate relations coordinator. (3)

     

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: 10 or more years of increasing responsibility in the area of development, business development, venture/private equity or related field with demonstrated experience in a research setting.

    Education: Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Demonstrated ability to secure major gifts of $5M+.
  • Proven ability to manage employees focused on increasing research, talent, and philanthropic support.
  • Demonstrated credibility necessary to influence and tactfully manage relationships with internal and external constituencies.
  • Experience in gaining access to and establishing connections with national business, foundation, and industry leaders; philanthropists; and other high-level individuals.
  • Proven ability to plan, initiate, manage, and evaluate challenging logistical situations.
  • Must demonstrate proven ability to troubleshoot and to identify problems and appropriate responses to complex issues.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Capacity to develop and execute complex strategy impacting philanthropic effectiveness.
  • Must possess superior managerial and organizational skills.
  • Strong writing skills required.
  • Must be able to travel and work outside of regular office hours.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  • Computer proficiency (including Microsoft Office) and ability to learn new programs.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    General office environment, occasional nights, and weekend hours. Regular travel required.
