Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’
focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a
national and global leader in higher education. We create and
foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and
philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine;
strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors,
alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and
patients.

 
Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work
model which includes four different work modalities. This role has
a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per
week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where
the majority/all team members will work in the office. Employees
who travel on university business can count those days towards
their onsite days.
 

The Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations
reports to the Associate Vice President, Development and Alumni
Relations. This position is a senior leader on the development and
alumni relations team and is responsible for managing the leaders
in the Berman Institute of Bioethics, the Center for Talented
Youth, and the International fundraising program in development and
alumni relations (DAR). The incumbent will be responsible for
creating a new development program in the newly established School
of Government and Policy.

 
Specific Duties and
Responsibilities: 

  1. Manage the leaders of the development and alumni relations
    programs for the Berman Institute of Bioethics, The Center for
    Talented Youth, and the International fundraising program in DAR.
    Once established, to manage the leader of the School of Government
    and Policy.

    • Provide oversight in each unit to help guide the work plan goal
      setting, pipeline building, strategies, and progress toward
      fundraising goals.
    • Partner on prospects and visits, as needed, to enhance
      relationship building and donor engagement.
    • Work with in partnership with development leaders on respective
      Advisory Boards and leadership counsels. Attend meetings,
      strategize, assist in building relationships, and identifying new
      members.
    • Partner with the Institute, Center and School leadership with
      the hiring and management of their development leadership.
    • Serve as counsel to the Institute, Center, and School
      leadership, and development leads on advancement-related
      topics.
    • Drive personal and organizational accountability to the stated
      objectives each fiscal year.
  2. Work closely with the Associate Vice President and other
    development leadership on campaign planning, goal setting and
    strategies related to campaign management and completion.
  3. With oversight of the Associate Vice President, thoughtfully
    build an inaugural development plan for the establishment of the
    first development program in the School of Government and
    Policy.
  4. Build collaborative partnerships across the development and
    alumni relations to foster strong relationships with the
    fundraising programs that cut across the University.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Seven years professional-level experience, including at least
    two years of management experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher education fundraising experience strongly
    preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage major and principal gift strategy and
    solicitation.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to develop strategic plans,
    implement programs, motivate and manage individuals and teams.
  • Strong management skills and proven ability to lead a team of
    individuals towards a common goal.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong partnerships individually
    and cross- departmentally and to ensure effective communication
    with team members and senior leaders.
  • Experience in campaign planning and implementation.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • High level of creativity, initiative and motivation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
