Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations

SUMMARY:  The Executive Director of
Development and Alumni Relations reports to the President and
serves in partnership with the President to lead all development,
alumni, and community engagement initiatives for the Seminary. The
Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations must be able
to quickly assess a successful development program and then bring
to that program a robust future philanthropic program both
internally and externally. To accomplish a successful and strong
program the successful candidate must work in a collaborative way
across the spectrum of constituents. The new Executive Director
must be strategic, results driven, and innovative. The successful
candidate must embody a spirit of service and lead with a desire to
lift up, support, and empower those with whom they work.

In addition, the new Executive Director of Development and
Alumni Relations must have documented extensive leadership
experience, combined with a strong passion for the vision, mission,
and goals of the United Methodist Church, as well as for the
constituents with whom the Seminary works and serves. 

In a world of multi-dimensional communications, the successful
candidate must have demonstrated achievement in utilizing
traditional and social media to attain advancement goals. The use
of electronic donor management and prospect research systems are
assumed competencies for the incumbent in this position.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position
builds, leads, and mentors a capable Development, Alumni,
Communications, Advertising, and Public Relations (Marketing/Social
Media) program; defines annual objectives using metrics that can be
measured and evaluates personnel in accordance with achievements;
and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with
Seminary policies and applicable laws. Management responsibilities
include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning,
assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing
complaints and resolving problems.

Advancement Responsibilities:

  • Lead and direct all marketing and fundraising campaigns and
    develop and implement associated policies and procedures. Inherent
    in meeting this responsibility is a demonstrated competence in
    using social media for marketing and fundraising purposes.
  • Possess five or more years of experience with electronic data
    management of donor records, communications flow strategies,
    prospect research as well as an understanding of the use of
    analytics in the work of the development office. Saint Paul
    utilizes DonorView as its donor management system.
  • Implement recommendations from a recently completed campaign
    feasibility study.
  • Position the institution to launch a comprehensive campaign
    within twenty-four months of assuming responsibilities in this
    position.
  • Gauge progress toward goals with monthly and annual reporting;
    set performance objectives and metrics; monitor and provide
    periodic progress reports to President, BOT, and senior leadership.
    Must have ability to make concessions and changes when needed to
    achieve results.
  • Craft and implement a comprehensive fundraising and marketing
    plan which reflects the priorities of the Seminary’s strategic
    plan, including:
    • Annual Campaign which includes a strong on-line and personal
      strategies
    • Alumni Relations/ Donor organizations/clubs
    • Direct Mail campaign
    • Special events fundraising
    • Planned giving program
    • Grants
    • Catalytic fund-raising opportunities
  • Oversee development and maintenance of donor and potential
    donor database.
  • Manage donor cultivation and stewardship programs.
  • Develop individual and corporate gifts from annual to major to
    legacy gifts.
  • Interact regularly and as needed with Seminary Board Members,
    Foundation Board Members, community leaders, current and
    prospective donors, alumni, volunteers, staff, faculty, and other
    development professionals.
  • Represent Saint Paul School of Theology to the community when
    appropriate.
  • Introduce the President to major donor prospects and assist the
    President in meeting with them.
  • Serve on Saint Paul School of Theology’s Executive Leadership
    Team.
  • Cultivate and develop relationships for Saint Paul in the
    community.
