UN-Habitat is enhancing partner collaboration in response to rapid urbanization and the growing importance of urban issues in global discussions. To increase engagement and visibility, the organization seeks an Exhibition Design Consultant to create innovative and dynamic spaces for WUF12. This role involves working under the guidance of the Chief of Communication and WUF Coordinator, with direct supervision by the Head of Production.
Duties and Responsibilities
Background, Organizational Setting, and Reporting Relationships: The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. The World Urban Forum Coordination Office is located within the External Relations Strategy Knowledge and Innovation Division (ERSKI) of UN-Habitat. One of the Division’s key mandates is to promote strategic alliances to support achievement of the goals of adequate shelter for all, and sustainable urbanization and human settlements development. The World Urban Forum (WUF) is UN-Habitat’s key stakeholder flagship platform. The World Urban Forum (WUF) is a non-legislative technical forum convened by the UN-Habitat biannually since 2002. The forum gathers a wide range of experts from every walk of life. Participants of the forum include but are not limited to national, regional, and local governments, non-governmental organizations, community-based organizations, professional, research institutions and academia, professional, private sector, development finance institutions, foundations, media, United Nations organizations and other international agencies. The WUF is recognized as the foremost global arena for interaction among policymakers, local government leaders, non-governmental organizations, and expert practitioners in the field of sustainable urban development and human settlements. The WUF has been identified as a key platform to support implementation of the New Urban Agenda adopted at the Habitat III conference. The WUF provides opportunities for stakeholder organizations of all kinds to come together to share the latest in innovative advances in sustainable urban development and projects showcasing the implementation of the NUA. Responsibility The consultant will report to the Head of Production, and will conceptualize, design, and oversee production and setup of the UN-Habitat corporate exhibition stand at WUF12 and modular WUF exhibits for key events leading up to WUF12. Specific assignments 1. Ensure that all work produced follows the highest sustainability standards within the industry. 2. Take part in meetings to identify the communication objectives, theme, key messages, and visual narrative of the exhibition. 3. Organize a half-day workshop with relevant internal stakeholders to identify the features that will be required for various activities at the stand. 4. Conduct site inspections, identify visual requirements, consult on exhibit design solutions including budgets and physical exhibition hall limitations. 5. Take part in media briefings on the optimal use of the booth as a communication platform for social initiatives, etc. 6. Work with the events management or exhibition company to translate approved designs into compelling visitor experiences by understanding, organizing, and integrating content through prototyping and modelling. 7. Create and propose innovative, on-brand, immersive, highly stylized concepts for the UN-Habitat corporate exhibition. 8. Design all aspects of the exhibition including but not limited to installation mockups/spatial design and visual presentation of digital, print, and audiovisual exhibition content. 9. Develop a modular WUF12 exhibition that will be used to promote WUF12 at key events prior to the Forum. 10. Create visually arresting representations that speak to the UN-Habitat brand (including but not limited to illustrator drawings, design briefs, elevations, redesigns, and technical drawings.) 11. Work with in-house graphic designers for exhibition content by providing design guidelines. 12. Develop an on-site installation plan and support the Head of the Production Unit with the production and installation.
Qualifications/special skills
A bachelor’s or a master’s degree in graphic design, Industrial Design, Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field is required. Over 7 years of responsible experience in exhibition design for international events and conferences is required. Demonstrated expertise in exhibition and space design, including knowledge of exhibition construction methods and materials is required. Ability to present exhibit and graphic concepts, production procedures, cost analysis, and evaluation is desirable. Expert knowledge of applicable CAD software, 3D and graphic design software is desirable. Experience in data visualization, motion graphics and information design are advantageous is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
