Plan International Somalia/Somaliland has been operational since 2020, headquartered in Hargeisa, and focused on promoting children’s rights and advancing gender equality for girls and young women. Our programs span humanitarian, protection, and development sectors, with priority areas including child protection, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) abandonment, gender equality, multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA), WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), and education. In just three years, we’ve significantly expanded our grant portfolio, receiving support from key donors such as EU INTPA, ECHO, DANIDA, GIZ, and the World Bank, and are actively working on securing additional funding to further strengthen our mission.
Mission of the Role
As Senior Business Development Manager (BDM), you will contribute to the growth of Plan International Somalia’s business portfolio. Working closely with senior leadership, you will develop and implement the organization’s resource mobilization strategy, build partnerships, and engage with a diverse set of donors and stakeholders—ranging from institutional donors to private sector and investment funds. You will also mentor the next generation of local leaders in business development.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain a robust portfolio of medium and large grants, while building a pipeline of future funding opportunities to meet expenditure targets.
Strengthen relationships with Plan’s National Offices, in-country partners, and key donors, ensuring strong collaboration and smooth grant management.
Lead the recruitment and capacity-building of a long-term Business Development Manager, focusing on building local expertise in donor relations, resource mobilization, and grant management.
Collaborate with finance and program departments to monitor grant projections, expenditure, and ensure compliance with donor requirements.
Facilitate the design and development of project proposals in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring gender and inclusion are at the forefront of every initiative.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in economics, international relations, engineering, or a related field (post-graduate training in development cooperation preferred).
Minimum 3 years of field experience in a similar business development position, with proven success in donor relations, particularly with institutional and multilateral donors (e.g., AECID, EU, World Bank, IDB, AfDB).
Experience in climate change, green-skills livelihoods for youth and women, and gender inclusion will be considered an asset.
Demonstrated ability to manage the project cycle, including proposal preparation, consortium building, and compliance with donor regulations.
Fluent in English (Spanish and Arabic are assets).
Mobility Requirements
National: 70% time in Somaliland/Somalia.
International: 30% travel, primarily for networking and donor engagement.
