Expressions of Interest: School of Pharmacy Casual Academics

About This Opportunity 

The School of Pharmacy are seeking casual academic staff for Semester 1, 2024.

Casual Academic staff provide a rich and important contribution to the University’s academic, teaching, research, artistic, outreach and clinical endeavours through the provision of a range of academically focused services and activities.

Casual Academic staff may be engaged to fulfil a wide range of duties, including (but not limited to) lecturing; tutoring; marking; demonstrating; teaching; clinical education; learning design, student outreach and engagement; moderating/facilitating and/or student advising; across multiple academic disciplines. 

Casual Academic staff are remunerated according to the category of their duties, as detailed in UQ’s Enterprise Agreement and reiterated in this job profile.

Casual Academic responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

• Lecturing/Teaching
• Tutoring
• Demonstrating/Engagement
• Marking
• Various Service and Engagement activities

Please see the below position descriptions for further information, noting that tutors and demonstrators may be asked to conduct all or only a subset of duties.

Casual Tutoring

• Preparing and delivering theoretical and/or practical tutorials which are engaging, context-relevant and where possible, participative
• Development, delivery and facilitation of simulation-based and/or learning experiences.
• Undertaking teaching and learning-related activities, including Course coordination, lecturing, tutoring and consultation
• Development, delivery and facilitation of simulation-based and/or learning experiences.
• Delivery and facilitation of external placement opportunities
• Tutoring students in both face to face and flexible delivery modes as appropriate to the discipline and context
• Providing tutoring support to students, including academic counselling, consultation, feedback and advice
• Undertaking marking and evaluation duties which are directly related to the tutorial (for example (for example, laboratory tests, quizzes, papers or assignments)
• Collaborating on educational practice and innovative curriculum design, including online learning and alternative teaching methods.
• Modifying existing tutorial material if required, by consulting with program advisors and stakeholders, to ensure the course is engaging, relevant and contemporary.
• Maintaining, and where possible improving, the quality of tutorials, as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.
• Providing tutorial support for other positions during planned or unexpected absences.
• Understanding and applying University Rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.
• Maintaining class participation and attendance lists as required.
• Maintaining a high level of performance on evaluations by students.

Demonstrating/Engagement

• Preparing in advance for practical classes by being familiar with lecture and practical content.
• Assisting with student engagement and learning during practical classes under the direction/supervision of the Course Coordinator, Lecturer and/or Head Demonstrator.
• Providing accurate advice to students on course material and seeking assistance or instruction from senior staff when required.
• Assisting with preparation of laboratory practicals
• Attending course-specific demonstrator meetings as required.
• Maintaining high level of performance on evaluations by students
• Any other duties as reasonably directed by your supervisor.
