POSITION SUMMARY
As part of MSU Extension (MSUE) and the Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute (AABI), and MSU AgBioResearch (ABR) this position will work closely with sugarbeet growers and complete educational programming related to sugarbeet production. This position will also conduct applied research in grower fields in response to their needs. Michigan is the 3rd leading sugarbeet producing state in the U.S. This position is located in the heart of the sugarbeet region in Michigan. This position will work with sugarbeet growers within the region, evaluating issues within their farm as well as opportunities to adopt new management techniques. You will collaborate across work teams and Institutes, including working with faculty, specialists, and educators to achieve profitable, sustainable sugarbeet production and overall advancement for the Michigan sugarbeet industry.
In this position, you will identify, design, implement, and evaluate research-based educational programs that meet current and projected outreach needs related to high priority needs of Michigan sugarbeet growers. This can include but not be limited to fertility, pest management, variety selection, and related topics facing sugarbeet growers. Through your leadership, you will work with Sugarbeet Advancement and the Michigan Sugar Company to conduct on-farm research related to topics important to sugarbeet growers, such as but not limited to field scale variety trials, new chemistries for pest management, and new management practices related to improved soil health.
You will be expected to be an effective communicator with teaching methods ranging from traditional in-person meetings held one-on-one or in small groups, to using different forms of synchronous and asynchronous distance learning technologies. You will be expected to develop a broad array of educational materials to include but not be limited to traditional news articles and bulletins, videos, infographics, etc. to meet the broad needs of clientele.
Through collaboration in research, engagement with clientele, and dissemination of research-based information through various methods, including in-person and multimedia programming and written communications, you will explore and implement programs that lead to public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors that improve the efficiency and sustainability of sugarbeet production. You will also develop, produce, and deliver sugarbeet outreach materials with messaging and content that is accessible and inclusive and is consistent with the Agriculture and Agribusiness Institute messaging.
Your work will include close collaboration with colleagues at MSU and MSU Extension, as well as the diverse network of partner groups that include Sugarbeet Advancement, the Michigan Sugar Company, the seed industry, and allied industry. Acting as a statewide point of contact, you will provide support for the sugarbeet industry addressing various agronomic and cropping systems topics which impact sustainability and efficiency.
Although negotiable, there will be space available for this position to work from the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center, Frankenmuth, Michigan. This is the sugarbeet region of Michigan and a leading row crops and dairy production region within Michigan that has great outdoor and cultural activities.
This position may be eligible to utilize a flexible work environment, however, there is an expectation to work from the Saginaw Valley Research and Extension Center.
