UN Women Background
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women supports UN Member States as they set global standards for achieving gender equality, and works with governments and civil society to design laws, policies, programmes and services needed to ensure that the standards are effectively implemented and truly benefit women and girls worldwide. UN Women also coordinates and promotes the UN system’s work in advancing gender equality, and in all deliberations and agreements linked to the 2030 Agenda. The entity works to position gender equality as fundamental to the Sustainable Development Goals, and a more inclusive world.
Internship Office Background
Established in Seoul in 2022 with support from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family of the Republic of Korea, the UN Women Centre of Excellence for Gender Equality the Centre seeks to function as a ‘knowledge hub’ to facilitate research, education & training, sharing of innovations and lessons learned, networking, and development of multi-stakeholder partnerships for the achievement of gender equality in the Asia-Pacific region. The Centre aims to contribute to operationalizing normative frameworks on gender equality and the empowerment of women, informing innovative approaches to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”), transforming harmful social norms in the fast-changing and unique social landscape of Asia and the Pacific, and forging partnerships across sectors. In 2023, the Centre will implement a full-scale programme with various partnerships building activities, as well as research, policy dialogue, and gender training activities.
The Centre has organized cornerstone events through its external relations team to establish the foundation of partnerships. These events include, but are not limited to:
1) “International Women’s Day celebration”, which brought together over 100 diplomats and international development experts from nearly 60 countries, including approximately 30 ambassadors and heads of international organizations based in the Republic of Korea (ROK).
2) “Ring the Bell for Gender Equality” Campaign, where the stock exchange in the ROK dedicated its opening bell-ringing ceremony to promoting gender equality in the technology and innovation sector.
3) “The Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs) Workshop for Korea” which served as a platform for over 60 private sector representatives to discuss challenges, share success stories, and learn from each other’s experiences in advancing gender equality. .
4) “The Korea Peacekeeping Forum for Women’s Empowerment” co-hosted with the Ministry of the National Defense of the Republic of Korea, bringing together high and middle ranking military officials, diplomats, and UN staff, affirming the critical importance of the women, peace, and security agenda and promotion of gender equality in UN peacekeeping operations.
5) “The 1st Seoul Gender Equality Dialogue: Breaking Gender Barriers for a Better Future of Key Industries” which emphasized the critical need to address the under-representation of women in key industries such as infrastructure, technology, and finance. The corporate leaders from global companies gathered to discuss how to break gender barriers and create corporate policies that enable women to join, thrive in such sectors.
6) The forum “Engaging Men for Ending Gender-Based Violence” hosted on the occasion of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, a global international campaign to raise awareness and call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.
The internship will offer multi-faceted experience of deepening one’s knowledge on various gender issues and building the professional experience with practical skills with related communications, partnership development, and events organization for UN WOMEN, along with exposure to an international and regional network of UN WOMEN’s work. It will support organizing following events and activities in particular:
The internship will provide exciting communication, collaboration, and networking opportunities with Korean government and non-government institutions, as well as with overseas UN WOMEN offices and their national partners in various countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. The internship will help refine the communications and writing skills in the field of international development with women’s empowerment and gender equality at heart. This internship experience will strengthen the candidate’s core skills for any career in the international development sector and beyond in the future.

Functional Competency
Education
a) Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
c) Be enrolled in a mandatory national service programme of which the internship may form a part;
d) Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.

Renumeration
Interns who are not in receipt of financial support from other sources such as universities or other institutions will receive a stipend from UN Women to partially subsidize their basic living costs for the duration of the internship.
