Position Summary
Staff Nurse I is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse I provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse I functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities

  • Contact patient and families 24-48 hours before appointment to confirm time, location and pre-operative instructions, and document in patient chart.
  • Assist with patient transport to/from OCC.
  • Assist anesthesiologist and any other anesthesiology providers with patient GA induction whenever possible.
  • Verify and implement orders from anesthesiologist and dentist as prescribed by the provider(s) and document it accurately in the patient’s electronic chart.
  • Monitor patient wellness in the OCC, following established patient safety protocols.
  • Manage patient’s acute and/or episodic minor illness or GA complications in the OCC.
  • Respond to emergency situations by evaluating patient and managing patient treatment in conjunction with anesthesiology team in the GA treatment room and OCC recovery room.
  • Review home care instructions with patient and family before discharge and document it in patient chart.
  • Assess patient readiness for discharge.
  • Treats adult and pediatric patients, families, staff and students with respect and dignity.
  • Work closely with Head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry to align goals and strategies for patient care in the OCC.
  • Evaluate best practices and evidence-based nursing to help implement strategies to improve patient care in the GA treatment rooms and OCC.
  • Monitor and advocate for patient and families’ concerns in/about the surgical facility and OCC.
  • Oversee day-to-day maintenance of OCC inventory for the pediatric dentistry patients.
  • Assist with departmental data collection.
  • Deliver data by deadlines.
  • Facilitate efficient pediatric dentistry patient flow in the OCC.
  • Identify specialized patient needs and inform appropriate members of the staff.
  • Attend in-service classes and other meetings as directed and as deemed necessary.
  • Assist in development, revision and implementation of protocols in the GA treatment rooms and OCC recovery room.
  • Assist with training related to specialty and education of residents, students and other allied health professionals.
  • Assist with development of educational materials for patient education related to GA and OCC.
  • Participate in patient care audits and accreditation processes.
  • Receive and provide feedback to members of the team regarding performance/practice.
  • Complete electronic learning modules and related programs by established date.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications:
    Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    EDUCATION:

    • Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
    • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), preferably the latter.

    EXPERIENCE:

    • One year of experience in pediatric critical care unit, general anesthesia recovery room, or similar.

    SKILLS:

    • COMPUTERS – Working knowledge of computers and basic business software programs including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail (e.g., Windows Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).

    ABILITIES:

    • Ability to keyboard and enter data.
    • Ability to respond to medical emergencies
    • Ability to manage patients’ acute and/or minor illness or general anesthesia complications in
    • the Recovery Room
    • Ability to start IV lines
    • Ability to assist with intubations
    • Ability to effectively communicate (oral and written) in both English and Spanish may be helpful for performance of tasks.
