Our group aims to elucidate quantitative aspects of gene regulation, timing and coordination between the steps in the central dogma of molecular biology. We investigate this in Escherichia coli and the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans using methods from molecular biology, biochemistry and quantitative biology. Ultimately, we want to understand how fundamental aspects of gene regulation are tied in with regulation at the organismal level and pathology to harness such knowledge for biomedicine. We are part of the Department Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy at the Institute of Chemistry and Biochemistry and engage in collaborations within the FU Berlin, nationally as well as internationally.

Job description:
Collaboration in teaching and research in the field transcription factors. Furthermore, the project will involve method development towards reading out global transcription dynamics without the need to modify strains genetically. If you are interested, please apply with your CV, a short description of your Master thesis project (or other equivalent research internships), your university transcripts and the contact information of two referees.

Requirements:
A completed scientific university studies (master or diploma) in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Medicine or related fields.

Desirable:
To carry out the experiments in the proposed project prior experience in
• molecular biology, especially cloning in E. coli on plasmids and in the genome,
• microbiology,
• (In vitro) transcription analysis methods,
• Immunoprecipitation and Protein- and RNA-analysis,
• Deep sequencing
The candidate should show
• a strong interest in microbiology and regulation of the process of transcription by RNA polymerase,
• a high level of motivation to spearhead and develop this project,
• appetite to combine wet and dry lab experiments,
• very good oral and written communication in English and German,
• the ability to work in a team.

Applications should be sent by e-mail, together with significant documents, indicating the reference code, in PDF format (preferably as one document) to Ms. Prof. Dr. Lydia Herzel: [email protected] or postal to
