The University Center invites applications for a Facilities Technician working in the University Center and Todd Building.

  • Meeting & Event Services:
    • Provides customer service to clients utilizing (UC & Todd) facilities and equipment, obtaining information from Conference & Event Scheduling Services and obtaining additional information from clients as needed.
    • Assist clients to find and prepare alternative space in the UC as needed due to ADA and capacity compliance and if available.
    • Ensures the efficient and effective operation of events taking place in the UC & Todd by understanding all facets of event and meeting services, responding to and resolving customer complaints, resolving to disruption of services and last-minute changes and requests by the client, and providing audio/visual set-up and support within scope of position.
    • Prepares meeting rooms and outdoor locations for events and activities by moving existing furniture and setting up equipment, tables, chairs, portable steps, stages, podiums, curtains, sound and technology equipment, other specifically requested items following set-up plans, diagrams, or verbal instructions.
  • Manager on Duty over Weekend Shifts:
    • Works in a public, customer service-oriented environment, interacting with students, the public, campus departments, and outside groups.
    • While on duty, provides consistence presence in the UC or Todd by making facility rounds and conducting check-ins with clients.
    • Ensures University Center/Todd and University of Montana procedures and policies are followed by clients and patrons.
    • Performs a measure of building and facility security by being the staff on duty and notifying proper authorities when security of patron and/or building is in jeopardy.
    • Reports damage to buildings, facilities, furnishings, and equipment, as well as emergency conditions beyond the capability to handle by contacting either the immediate supervisor or UM Police dependent on specific incident.
  • Custodial Responsibility
    • Works in a public, customer service-oriented environment, constantly interacting with students, the public, campus departments, and outside groups.

    • Obtains daily information from verbal, written, and computer-based applications sources. Communicates through notes, radio, phone, and email.
    • Investigates and identifies problems in the building mechanical systems using computer-based software (e.g. Johnson Controls) and/or physical inspection and reacts appropriately.
    • Employs safe work practices for self and employees; determines appropriate personal protective equipment.
    • Changes lamps and filters, which routinely require the use of ladders and/or mechanical lift.
    • Regularly inspects fire safety equipment.
    • Controls pests as a Pest Control Operator or Pest Control Applicator.
    • Is competent in all areas of routine and project cleaning

Physical Requirements

(Qualified candidates must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform the primary functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.)

  • Lifting: Floor to knuckle height, 75#. 12 inches to 40 inches, 75#. Floor to 60 inches, 50#. Floor to 48 inches, 60#. Floor to overhead, 5# sustained, with both hands.
  • Carrying: 2 handed front carry 75# for 10 feet.
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (during the use of cleaning equipment 25#, handling janitor’s cart 5#).
  • Pushing and pulling forces required (handling, pushing and pulling classroom and office furniture, file cabinets, and equipment): up to 60# sustained at waist level.
  • Pulling force required for handling Kaivac machine: 75# force.
  • Static trunk forward bending and twisting from a standing, crouching or kneeling position while using tools.
  • Reaching with your arms in all directions, including overhead with 5# in both hands, sustained.
  • Working overhead from various positions (standing, squatting, and kneeling).
  • Balancing when climbing and working on a 6 and 10- and 12-foot ladders.
  • Use of various hand grip circumferences and firm hand grip positions while manipulating various tools and equipment (maximum 50#).

Physical Screen will be administered prior to a final offer of employment.

Minimum Required Experience

  • High School diploma and three (3) years cleaning experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Provide meaningful evaluations
  • Provide training where appropriate
  • Operate specialized equipment
  • Maintain appropriate records; and develop and obtain specialized custodial knowledge
  • Knowledge of and ability to understand Collective Bargaining Agreements

Work Schedule:          Full-time, 1.0 FTE (40 Hours a week),

               Work schedule- academic year is Wed – Sun, 7am to 4pm

      Work schedule- summer is either Wed – Sat, 7am to 6pm or Tue – Sat, 7am to 4pm

 flex scheduling may be required if the building has to open for a special event on a Sunday

Salary:                          $18.97/hr

Union Affiliation:         FOCUS-MFPE

Probationary Period:  Six months minimum
