Faculty Professor Associate – Full-Time

The Department of Computational and Systems Biology at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine (CSB) is harnessing the power of computational methods and system-level analysis to address fundamental biological and biomedical questions and to educate the next generation of multidisciplinary scientists. The Roth Lab within CSB is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor (appointment stream) to lead our human disease gene mutational scanning program.  The candidate will work actively with other members of the Roth lab and its international network of collaborators to generate variant effect maps and exploit them for the benefit of human health and a fundamental understanding of variant functions.  Activities will include: i) developing and validating variant effect functional assays for priority genes, e.g. those related to cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemias, ii) generating variant effect maps for priority human disease genes using various high-throughput strategies, including but not limited to flow cytometry, FACS, and growth-based selection, iii) application of variant effect datasets to provide insight on various aspects of protein function and/or disease prediction.  Extensive knowledge and experience with human cell-based high-throughput assays as well as expert-level knowledge of molecular biology techniques is required, as is a substantial track record of applying these approaches to understand the impacts of human variation on protein variants at scale.

Experience and Training:

·   PhD in molecular biology or related field and at least 10 years of post-PhD experience in a related field

·   Very strong molecular biology experience, particularly in the areas of high-throughput assay design and screening

·   Demonstrated mastery of flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and human cell culture is required

·   Conceptual and hands-on experience in a variety of techniques for next-generation sequencing techniques (Illumina and PacBio), and for generating sequencing libraries for diverse platforms.

·   Substantial experience in lecturing and directing courses at the undergraduate or graduate level is essential.

·   Extensive experience managing research technicians and graduate teaching assistants or the equivalent is essential.

Position Responsibilities:

·   Design, plan, and execute multiplexed assays of variant effects for human disease genes

·   Teach one or more lab-based courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level

·   Write grant applications as a PI and/or assist in grant writing
