The University of Pittsburgh Department of Religious Studies and the College of General Studies (CGS) in coordination with the Jewish Studies Program and the Department of Sociology are seeking to appoint an appointment stream Teaching Assistant Professor in sociology of religion, with a focus on contemporary Judaism. The teaching for this position is 6 courses (18 credits) per year split between in-person offerings and online courses taught through the CGS Online program. The successful candidate will typically teach 2-3 sections per year of Sociology of Religion, both online and in person. They will also teach other courses depending on the needs of CGS, the Jewish Studies Program, and the departments of Sociology and Religious Studies, with many courses cross-listed across more than one of these units.

The position begins at the start of the fall term 2024, with an initial contract for three years that is renewable if there is continued need for teaching in this area and continued excellence in teaching. The Dietrich School has an appointment-stream career development path with the possibility of promotions to Associate Teaching Professor and Teaching Professor over time and in subsequent contract renewals.

Required Qualifications:

· PhD in Sociology, Religious Studies, or a related field; with training in sociology and Jewish studies.

· Experience teaching in a research university with a diverse student body, including nontraditional and adult students.

· Ability to teach courses on sociology of religion and contemporary Judaism.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Previous experience or training in teaching on-line courses.

· Ability to teach courses on Holocaust history and memory and on modern antisemitism.

· Specialization in contemporary Europe with interests that complement the work of the European Studies Center and/or the Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.
