BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Tallahassee office was established in 2015 and has resettled over 1,500 refugees from 50 countries into Big Bend communities. 

SCOPE OF VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT INTERN WORK: The major goal of the Comprehensive Refugee Service (CRS) is to ensure services are delivered according to the IRC and Department of Children and Families (DCF) stipulated contract. The main motto for the CRS program is Safety, Service and Compliance. Types of clients include Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Parolees. Clients are mainly received from Reception and Placement (R&P), Matching Grant or DCF including walk-in clients.This position requires a minimum commitment of 15 hours a week for at least three months. Please note that all internship positions are unpaid.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The CRS Intern will assist the CRS team with the following tasks:

  • Assisting with documents, scanning and filing on box (daycare documents).

  • Providing interpretation services both for clients and IRC CRS staff (Arabic, Spanish, Swahili, Pashto and Dari).

  • Completing data and note entry into ETO under Workforce Development Program.

  • Creating files and managing documentation such as intake forms, demographic data, green card paperwork and so on.

  • Ensuring refugees receive the appropriate public assistance by filling out paperwork, accompanying them to required appointments (Medical, bus orientation), completing and referring clients for benefits and communicating with the providers as needed.

  • Assisting refugees with problem-solving various issues while empowering them to handle thing on their own and supporting their self-sufficiency.

  • Accompanying refugees to appointments at various referred to providers where necessary, especially health offices. 

  • Adhering to all IRC work ethics while serving clients by completing required training, dressing appropriately, communicating effectively and requesting help whenever needed. 

  • Ability to collaborate with CRS staff and outside community providers partnered with CRS. 

  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and special staff development programs.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Excellent communication and writing skills

  • Organized with attention to detail

  • Able to work independently and under pressure

  • An interest in international and refugee issues

  • Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects

  • Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting

  • Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems

  • A car/driver’s license is beneficial

  • Submit volunteer hours on volunteer dashboard
