REGI is a non-profit organization dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of injured and orphaned native bird species and public education on wildlife issues. REGI provides medical treatment, food, housing, and professional care to ensure release back into the wild for over 800 birds annually. REGI boasts one of the largest flight training facilities in the world used to exercise large raptors and prepare them for release.

Job Description: REGI is looking for 3-4 hardworking, energetic, flexible, and fun interns for the fall of 2024. The intern’s main responsibilities will include assisting our rehabilitation staff in the daily care of avian  patients and residents. This includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Husbandry of native Wisconsin wildlife undergoing rehabilitation, including cleaning cages and mews and feeding species-appropriate diets.
  • Maintaining clinic and ambassador animal areas cleanliness (i.e. sweeping, mopping, laundry, etc.)
  • Administering medication and fluid therapy
  • Performing wound care, blood work, fecals, X-Rays, etc
  • Using Raptor Education Group approved techniques to restrain native Wisconsin birds including birds of prey, waterfowl, passerines, and more. 
  • Observing behavior of both patients as well as permanent residents 

Training will be provided for all these areas.

Extensive training is provided to all  interns in the handling of our avian ambassador collection

Our internship consists of 5 day work weeks with 8-10 hour days. Wildlife Rehabilitation and animal care  is not your typical 9-5 job-  Longer days are required to care for babies and admit sick and injured patients after hours if needed. Rehabilitation interns will also have the opportunity to spend one day per week in the Education Department assisting with public outreach and the care of our Avian ambassadors.

Housing/Stipend: There is a $75 a week stipend and on-site, furnished housing will be provided by the Raptor Education Group, Inc.  

Interns are required to reside on-site for full immersion in the wildlife rehabilitation experience.

Qualifications: 

  • Strong interest in avian rehabilitation and care 
  • Pursuing a degree in wildlife, captive wildlife, biology, or closely related field. Other fields of interest will be considered. 
  • Physical demands include: being on your feet 8+ hours per day, kneeling, cleaning, and ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Interns must able and willing to adapt to flexible hours and schedules depending on patient care needs
  • Interns will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions 
  • Willing to be a positive and enthusiastic team member with a strong work ethic. 
  • Must be able to work with the public in a professional manner. 

Dates: Mandatory orientation date August 20th, 2024. Internships typically run through October. Ending date is flexible.
