About the role

The New Families Program currently have a vacancy for a Casual Family Support Worker to join our New Families team located in Nudgee.  This position is responsible for contributing to the provision of a safe and supportive environment for young mothers and their babies in the Mercy Community Intensive Support House. The role requires provision of practical and emotional support to mothers so mothers can learn to meet the care and protective needs of their babies.

The Intensive Support House is a one worker model staffed across a 24 hour period 7 days a week with each shift typically 8 hours, including midnight to 8am shifts.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting mothers to develop appropriate parenting and living skills that enable them to gain confidence in caring for their babies
  • Undertake rostered shifts in the New Families Program Intensive Support House  which include evening, night and weekend shifts
  • Provide information, education and support to mothers so as to develop appropriate parenting and living skills, by implementing Goals Plans for the mothers developed by the Coordinator and Caseworker
  • Provide accurate written and verbal reports in relation to the mothers and babies progress during shifts undertaken, through case notes, handover discussions, supervision and participation in team meetings
  • Building and maintaining relationships with mothers and role model expected behaviours
  • Support personal skill development contributing to the provision of a safe and supportive environment for vulnerable mothers and their babies

$45.00 – $48.25 per hour (award) plus superannuation plus generous salary packaging available.

About you

As the successful applicant, you will possess:

  • Certificate III or higher in Community Services or related discipline and relevant experience
  • Ability to work unsupervised with vulnerable mothers and babies providing guidance and support, with understanding of issues impacting clients such as trauma, domestic violence, mental health, and substance misuse
  • Understanding of baby care, development, attachment and bonding, and safe parenting practices
  • Demonstrated intermediate ability to use computer IT systems including MS Office
  • Evidence of current vaccination against whooping cough or willingness to obtain prior to commencement
  • Queensland Provisional Green or above Driver Licence
  • Ability to obtain positive notice in the legislatively required personal history check in line with service stream compliance requirements
  • First Aid and CPR Certificate or be prepared to obtain a First Aid and CPR Certificate
