About Uniting:

We contribute to the work and mission of the Uniting Church in NSW and the ACT through social justice advocacy, community services and spiritual care. We provide care and support for people through all ages and stages of life, with a focus on people experiencing disadvantage and vulnerability. Our purpose is to inspire people, enliven communities and confront injustice.

Uniting is a Child Safe Organisation committed to promoting the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of children and young people.

About the opportunity:

At Uniting Newpin, we specialise in helping parents who are working to reunite with their children after facing child protection concerns. Our program is designed to strengthen emotional maturity, resilience, and parenting skills, ensuring that families can safely and happily reunite. Here, your work will directly contribute to the well-being and future of vulnerable children and their families.

As a Family Worker, you won’t just be facilitating groups—you’ll be empowering parents to build safer, more nurturing homes. You’ll lead parent education and therapeutic support groups, offering one-on-one support to parents in need. This role calls for someone who is not only passionate but also sensitive to the unique challenges families face. Your ability to connect, assess, and communicate will be key in fostering positive change. Together with our dedicated team, you’ll help parents develop the skills they need to create loving, secure environments for their children.

  • Coordinate and facilitate parent education groups: Plan, organise, and lead group sessions focused on parenting education and skill-building.
  • Lead therapeutic parent support groups: Facilitate therapeutic groups that provide emotional support and guidance to parents.
  • Provide individualised support: Offer one-on-one assistance to parents, tailoring support to their unique needs and circumstances.
  • Conduct assessments: Evaluate needs, strengths, and risks within the families to inform the development of personalised support plans.
  • Develop and implement support plans: Work with parents to create and execute plans aimed at enhancing their parenting capacity and improving family dynamics.
  • Promote safe and nurturing environments: Work collaboratively with parents to ensure their homes are safe, supportive, and conducive to child development.
  • Engage with families in crisis: Build trust and work closely with families experiencing challenges, helping them navigate and overcome difficulties.
  • Case documentation and reporting: Maintain accurate and detailed records of interactions, assessments, and progress, preparing reports as required.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams: Work alongside other professionals, such as social workers, therapists, and educators, to provide comprehensive support to families.
  • Encourage participation in programs: Develop strategies to motivate and engage parents from various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds to participate in relevant programs and activities.
  • Cultural sensitivity and competence: Apply appropriate cultural knowledge when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, ensuring services are respectful and effective.

Your Qualifications & Experience

To succeed in this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of experience working with parents, using a strengths-based approach.
  • Expertise in facilitating therapeutic and psycho-educational group work with parents.
  • Ability to connect with families in crisis, working alongside them to achieve their goals.
  • Strong assessment and case reporting skills.
  • Experience working with diverse communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families.
  • Current NSW WWCC and current NSW Driver’s license.
