Reports to: Executive Director, Clean Streams Coordinator, Program Manager

Compensation: $15-20/hr DOE, anticipated 20-30 hours per week,  Mid June to Mid August (can start earlier if available) 

Type: Hybrid; Field/Office/Work from Home

We are seeking two paid interns to help us support plastic bag-free farmers markets and complete other field work this summer.

Do you have a passion for the environment? Do you have experience with farmers markets, outreach, and pollution prevention, or just believe that single use plastic and expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam) has no place at Farmers Markets? Help us stop litter before it starts by eliminating single use plastic bags and foam, and  advocating for reusable bags at Northern Virginia farmers markets.

Responsibilities:

  • Research Plastic Free Farmers Markets and help create Plastic Free Tool-kit for VA Farmers Markets
  • Provide educational tips and resources on refusing, reducing, and reusing resources
  • Promote Plastic-Free July and attend specific farmers markets during Plastic-Free July
  • Distribute reusable bags and baskets
  • Support farmers market managers and vendors in their plastic reduction efforts
  • Create outreach materials (digital and physical) on litter reduction topics
  • Assist with litter monitoring efforts
  • Complete other field work assignments as needed

Requirements:

  • Physical capability to attend multiple farmers markets per week in hot weather, including setting up a pop-up tent, table, and materials
  • Must have own reliable transportation. Mileage will be reimbursed
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Interest in and experience with engaging members of the public about environmental issues
  • Ability to work independently and follow procedures
  • Commitment to not use single-use plastic bags or bottles

Preferred:

  • Experience in environmental advocacy/education
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish, or other spoken language such as Korean, Arabic, Vietnamese, Amharic) 
  • Sense of humor is a plus!
