Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
Main Purpose of Job:
The role of the Communications Officer is to support the implementation of the British Embassy’s Communication Strategy, which includes the organisation of events, the creation of content (including some filming and editing for social media posts), stakeholder engagement and graphic design.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic and proactive person, incredibly creative and with experience curating and managing events, working with stakeholders and using editing software. They will also be a team player working closely with different teams around the Embassy to help dynamize the embassy’s profile and positioning across the country and online. They will also be required to evaluate the results of each campaign and, working with colleagues, propose innovative strategies to improve our strategy and engagement.
During this bicentenary year of diplomatic relations between Colombia and the UK, the Communications Officer will provide support in staging regional UKCOL Roadshows in 5 Colombian cities, as well as the wider agenda of visits, receptions, activations etc.
The Communications Officer will report to the Digital Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer and work closely with the Head of Communications. They will be supported by the Administrative and Communications Officer and by a Communications Intern.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Content creation and coordination of social media channels (30%)
- Coordinate weekly content planning for digital platforms and provide ideas to enhance campaigns and boost engagement.
- Support on the creation and implementation of innovative digital campaigns, which can be measured against wider Embassy policies. Work closely with Embassy teams to ensure policy priorities are effectively represented on social media channels.
- Measure performance and perception of the digital platforms, using the relevant tools and report results. Analyse available insights, opportunities or threats across digital platforms and report findings and suggestions to line managers and wider Embassy colleagues to maximise reach and engagement.
- Monitor all the Embassy’s Social Media channels to be aware and actively propose replies, engagement or/and actions as required.
- Act as a point of contact with the Digital Hubs in Washington and in Mexico and report/support their initiatives in the digital landscape.
- Attend meetings, events, trips to help ensure high quality social media content.
- Improve corporate image supported by the Digital Campaigns and Public Diplomacy Officer and wider members of the team.
Stakeholder engagement (30%)
- Support on the management of the Embassy database with potential influencers or stakeholders and propose online and offline activities to increase engagement with them.
- Socialise opportunities to incorporate British Embassy stakeholders (implementing partners, private sector sponsors, other companies etc) in events, activations and initiatives.
- Explore opportunities to amplify our engagement and target audiences in Colombia.
Event management (30%)
- Support the design and organisation of Embassy-led events both at the Residence and elsewhere in Colombia
- Liaise with event production teams to support with logistics
- Help with overall event management and execution
- Distribution of events and coordination of guest lists
Administrative and occasional supervision (10%)
- Support with relevant administrative tasks including purchasing/procurement, in line with relevant rules.
- Assign tasks to communications intern(s) and supervise them where appropriate, including mentoring and teaching them how to undertake their own tasks and responsibilities
Resources Managed:
Candidate will have access to mentoring and job shadowing, as well as the opportunity to work on cross-embassy teams or projects.
Scope for participation in learning opportunities provided by the L&D committee and / or wider Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO).
Essential qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience of at least one (1) year of professional experience in communications and events in agencies or high-level organisations, particularly in event management, content creation/marketing or storytelling, influencer engagement and metrics assessment in Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
- Intermediate knowledge and experience working with relevant design and content production software – video editing, social media management tools – and of photography/filming for social media campaigns ideally Canva, CapCut, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
- Passionate, with knowledge of international relations and Embassy priority areas with a collaborative, can-do attitude.
- Experience working in a team with the ability to work independently.
- The successful candidate will be an organised self-starter with excellent intrapersonal skills
Language Requirements:
Fluency in English and Spanish
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
- Experience working in an international environment.
- Experience working with high-level stakeholders from the public and private sectors
- Good understanding of how a diplomatic mission operates

Applicants must have the legal status to live and work in Colombia
Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
Appointable candidates who were unsuccessful may be placed on a ‘reserve list. If during the reserve period of 6 months the same or a largely similar role becomes available, that role may be offered to the second or subsequent candidate.
The successful candidate will have to go through a background check process, according to Embassy policies.
