Main purpose of the job:

 

Provide verbal interpretation, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (medical round, consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population.

 

Accountabilities:

  • Inform medical staff about important cultural nuances to consider during a meeting, medical consultation, or interview with local people.
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter.
  • Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio calls or other telecom devices, when necessary.
  • Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners.
  • Translate MSF internal / external documents into local language(s).
  • Keep record of all translated documents.
  • Look after all equipment provided, i.e. dictionaries or other books that belong to MSF
  • Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.

MSFCH Context Specific Accountabilities:

  1. Interpretation and Translation
  • Provide accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation during medical consultations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Facilitate communication during meetings, individual discussions, and training sessions.
  • Translate medical documents, patient education materials, and consent forms while maintaining cultural relevance.
  • Adapt interpretation to account for local dialects and linguistic nuances specific to Mosul and surrounding areas.

 

  1. On-Site and Outreach Support
  • Accompany the team to various locations within Mosul, including outreach sites and Decentralization activities to support verbal and written communication.
  • Assist in health promotion activities by translating materials and facilitating communication with the community.
  • Provide insights into security-related nuances and help the team navigate interactions in different community settings.

 

  1. Language Mediation
  • Facilitate Communication Between Medical Staff and Patients: bridge Scommunication gaps between healthcare providers and patients on non-English speaking backgrounds. By ensuring clear and accurate translation.
  • Advise healthcare provider on cultural considerations that may influence the patient’s understanding and response during interpretation or Document translation. This includes recognizing non-verbal cues, gestures, and tone of voice, ensuring that the communication is culturally appropriate and respectful.
  • Inform IMS (International Mobile staff) appropriate conservation mechanism particularly when working with women and children. To be aware of sensitive topics or words may impact communication and ensure that conversations are respectful of these norms while maintaining effective communication. (Provide cultural advice to healthcare providers to ensure that all interactions are respectful, especially in terms of body language and gender-related communication).

 

  1. Supporting the Healthcare Process Support in Trauma informed care:
  • ensure that all conversations with patients who have experienced trauma are handled with sensitivity. This is especially important when discussing mental health, conflict, or reproductive health issues, through Adapting interpretation methods to provide a supportive environment that encourages open communication without triggering distressing memories or emotions for the patient.
  • Help patients understand medical procedures, appointments, and their rights by Clearly interpreting and removing language and cultural barriers as informed the IMS staff.
  • Always act with professionalism, respect patient privacy, and provide unbiased, accurate interpretations during translation or interpretation.
  1. Collaboration and Administrative Duties
  • Document interpretation sessions and provide feedback on communication challenges to improve service delivery.
  • Participate in team meetings, trainings, and evaluations to enhance medical and cultural interpretation skills.

Qualifications & Preferred Skills

Specific requirements for the role:

Applicants – Female candidates ONLY
Education – Essential Bachelor of Art, degree in Translation or BA in English Language/Literature
– Desirable health knowledge background

Experience – Essential: minimum 1-year experience in translation field,
– Desirable: previous experience with MSF or other NGO’s

Languages – Essential: Fluency in English (minimum B2 Level) and Local Arabic Accents
– Essential: Proficiency in specific medical terminology and vocabulary

Competencies & Skills – Results and details oriented, teamwork, flexibility, commitment, service oriented and stress management, Strong interpersonal skills
– Essential: basic computer skills
