FHI 360: Climate Change and Disaster Resilience Curriculum Specialist – Honiara

Position Summary:
The National Climate Change and Disaster Resilience Curriculum Specialist will play a key role in ensuring that the revised senior secondary curriculum in the Solomon Islands equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to understand, adapt to, and mitigate the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. As a member of the curriculum development team, this specialist will support the integration of climate resilience concepts into both new and existing curriculum content, with a strong emphasis on contextual relevance and practical application in the Solomon Islands.

Working in close collaboration with MEHRD and other technical experts, the specialist will review subject syllabi, teaching and learning materials (TLMs), and classroom assessments to identify gaps and opportunities for strengthening climate-related education. The role includes advising subject developers—particularly in areas such as Agricultural Science, Science, and the new “Living Sustainably” subject—on how to embed locally appropriate climate change concepts and disaster preparedness strategies. The specialist will also contribute to the design and delivery of training sessions to build capacity among curriculum writers and teachers on effective climate and disaster resilience education.

This position requires strong familiarity with the Solomon Islands’ national climate policies, education frameworks, and disaster risk reduction strategies. The specialist will ensure that curriculum reforms reflect national priorities, meet ADB and MEHRD expectations, and promote inclusive, student-centered approaches. By grounding technical content in the lived experiences of Solomon Island communities and aligning with sustainable development goals, the specialist will help position education as a critical tool for long-term climate resilience and adaptation.

Key Responsibilities:

Assess gaps in climate resilience education in syllabi and support the integration of climate adaptation, sustainability, and disaster resilience into national curricula, including Agriculture and Living Sustainably.
Provide training and technical support to curriculum developers ensuring effective integration of climate and disaster resilience concepts into curriculum resources.
Support policy implementation, collect data, monitor progress, and contribute to reporting on climate education reforms in alignment with national and international frameworks.
Collaborate with government agencies, education stakeholders, and civil society organizations, engage in policy discussions, and ensure timely reporting on curriculum development and implementation.

Required Qualifications:

Advanced degree in climate change, disaster risk reduction, environmental sustainability, or a related field.
At least 6+ years of general experience in climate change education, disaster risk reduction, and environmental sustainability.
Experience working within the national curriculum development and teacher training sector
Knowledge of national policies and frameworks on climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction in education
