POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Field Coordinator is integral to the AmeriCorps field program’s goal of accomplishing challenging conservation projects and disaster deployments, as well as providing training, education, coordination, and leadership to ensure a positive and safe experience for Members. The Field Coordinator must have the ability to assist in personnel management, equipment maintenance, and training delivery in technical and personal development skills. Both office and field operations are required by this position and a flexible schedule is a necessity. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program & Field Support

  • Ensure project quality by providing assistance to Team Leads in the field
  • Provide technical expertise, guidance, and emotional support to Members 
  • Assist with project logistics through weekly scheduling, briefing and debrief meetings 
  • Model risk management procedures in the field to create a safe environment
  • Participate in an on-call system for crews in the field and respond to emergency situations
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with community and project partners
  • Specialized areas of responsibility as assigned by Field Supervisor which may include radio management, gear oversight, vehicle maintenance, etc. 
  • Monitor and maintain overall program policy compliance as it relates to ACSTL guidelines

Development & Training

  • Assist with the development and implementation of technical and fundamental leadership trainings
  • Provide encouragement, support, and supervision to Team Leads 
  • Observe Members to ensure adherence to quality standards, policies and procedures, and provide timely and relevant coaching and/or resources as needed
  • Participate in annual member development cycle include goal setting, mid-year check-ins and exits

General Administration

  • Manage and maintain accurate project reporting including field site visits, supply inventories.
  • Work within an established program budget; manage credit cards, receipts, and financial reporting.
  • Contribute to annual updates of applicable manuals and member resources 
  • Assist in implementation of strategic plans that align with ACSTL staffing and budgetary plan.

SALARY & BENEFITS

$38,000 – $42,000 annual salary based on experience. Benefits include health insurance reimbursement, vacation / sick / personal time off, retirement match, disability/life insurance, and 16 paid holidays including winter holiday break. Ongoing staff training opportunities in technical and skills, including vehicle maintenance, small engine and equipment rebuild/repair, hand tool sharpening, intermediate felling, training facilitation and project management. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 1-3 years experience with direct oversight of field work and team leadership 
  • Ability to problem-solve and respond competently to situations associated with managing young adults
  • Working knowledge of natural resource project management such as trail maintenance and construction, shoreline/watershed restoration, forest/prairie management, and wildlife habitat improvement. 
  • Experienced skill level in all or most of the following: trail construction & maintenance, crosscut/chainsaw operation & maintenance, hand tool maintenance, fencing, herbicide application, wildland firefighting, managing front country and backcountry projects
  • Must meet minimum physical requirements and successfully pass annual Work Capacity Test 
  • Familiarity with AmeriCorps and local, state, and federal natural resource agencies
  • Maintain clean and insurable driving record & valid driver’s license
  • Must pass criminal history background checks

DESIRED COMPETENCIES AND CHARACTERISTICS

  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and facilitating training 
  • S-212 B or Level 2 Faller certification 
  • Experience with prescribed fire and ability to attain NWCG Wildland FFT2 Certification
  • Relevant medical certification (WFR, WEMT, EMT)Prior AmeriCorps or service program experience
  • Desire to spend time in the company of young adults; ability to instigate fun
  • Professional written/verbal communication skills 
  • Initiative to act independently with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and capacity to work in a fluid, changing work environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree

SITE CONDITIONS

This position is required to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear, periodically climb, balance, hike, bend, exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects. They must be able to operate a computer and drive a program vehicle. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals to perform the essential functions. Regular Schedule: Monday – Friday, flexible 40-hour work-week; occasional weekends or evenings as needed.

Travel: This position requires a significant amount of time at all crew locations, with occasional out-of-town travel for up to 10 days to assist crews on technical projects. 

  • Regular: Support and monitoring of operating sites as frequent as multiple times a month
  • Annual: 2-3 full corps 8-10 day training trips, 4-6 week annual out-of-state culmination trip
