The Field Ecologist and Entomologist provides technical and scientific support for conservation initiatives in conservation planning and measures of conservation success (~80%) and develops/coordinates community science projects (~20%).  They perform a variety of scientific tasks, conservation activities (prescribed fire, invasive species removal, seed collection) and manage the seasonal science staff. This includes the following functions:

  • Implement and provide logistical support for research, inventory and monitoring projects.
  • Inventory and research rare and declining pine barrens insects.
  • Hire, train & supervise seasonal field staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Manage wildlife tracking systems (e.g., Motus, automated radio telemetry networks)
  • Coordinate and supervise bird banding operations, per state and federal permits.
  • Collect and manage data associated with plants, animals, and ecological communities.
  • Collaborate with staff, and private and public partners on research projects.
  • Coordinate the Community Science program, in conjunction with science, education, and outreach staff.
  • Provide presentations and lead field trips for college students, education programs, conferences, and workshops.
  • Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
  • Support the wildland fire management program, potentially serving as a prescribed fire crew member.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in an environmental science-related field or bachelor’s degree in an environmental science-related field and at least 5 years’ experience.
  • Working knowledge of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
  • Familiarity and understanding of fire-adapted ecosystem dynamics, field ornithology and field entomology.
  • Experience collecting, managing, interpreting, and analyzing ecological data.
  • Ability to produce technical reports/publications, make defensible decisions and recommendations, and communicate technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite Software, ArcMap, and statistical software packages.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Working knowledge of animal capture, handling and tracking techniques and technologies.
  • Entomological, ornithological, and botanical identification and sampling methods.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.
