Muddy Sneakers is a non-profit organization that connects children with nature through engaging outdoor science experiences. We partner with 5th-grade classes in North Carolina public schools, providing hands-on outdoor learning field trips.

We are seeking passionate and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Field Instructors in the Mountain region. In this role, you will guide students on exciting explorations in local natural areas, fostering their curiosity and appreciation for the natural world.

Position Overview:

• Location: Mountains Hub (based in Brevard, NC)
• Supervisor: Mountains Programming Manager
• Schedule: Part-time (2-4 days per week), seasonal
• Compensation: $19.00 – $20.99 per hour
• Benefits: 3% 401k match, professional development support, and mileage reimbursement.

Responsibilities:

• Lead engaging and informative outdoor science lessons for 5th-grade students.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of students during field trips.
• Effectively manage student behavior using positive and respectful techniques.
• Maintain a thorough knowledge of local natural history, 5th-grade science curriculum, and teaching methods.
• Navigate outdoor settings confidently, using maps and compasses as needed.
• Collaborate with fellow instructors and programming staff.
• Participate in staff meetings and trainings.
• Maintain equipment and supplies.
• Complete administrative tasks, such as submitting reports and mileage logs.

Qualifications:

• A passion for environmental education and the Muddy Sneakers mission.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Experience working with children in educational settings.
• Knowledge of or a willingness to learn about the natural history of the mountains region of North Carolina.
• Current Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification, as well as Child and Adult CPR (may be obtained through Muddy Sneakers).
• Willingness to enroll in or current certification in an approved environmental education certification program.
