About the Organization

Adventure Scientists is a nonprofit organization on a mission to protect the planet by pairing scientists with individuals uniquely capable of gathering difficult-to-obtain data. Our team collaborates with scientists worldwide to solve pressing environmental challenges, from biodiversity to climate change. Every role here offers a chance to make an impact on a global scale!

About the Role

We’re looking for a Beech and Butternut Tree Marketing Fellow to help us document and protect two of North America’s most iconic and imperiled Eastern forest tree species. This seasonal, low-commitment role blends hiking adventure, creativity, and conservation, perfect for someone already familiar with hiking and exploring the forests of the Eastern United States and who wants to support science in a meaningful way.

You’ll collect field data on beech and butternut trees while capturing photos, reels, and stories that spark public awareness and action. We are not seeking full-time staff; we are looking for someone who’s already out there enjoying wild places and would be excited to get paid a stipend to turn those trips into something bigger.

You’ll be supported throughout by our Communications Manager and receive a brand toolkit with all the guidance you need.

Responsibilities

  • Collect observational data on beech and butternut tree health while doing what you already love – hiking, biking, backpacking, and exploring the eastern forests. Submit data for at least 3 field days per month (flexible timing, based on your schedule and weather conditions).
  • Host one field day event for volunteers in your region within the study area.
  • Capture and deliver monthly content (15-30 photos, 3 short video/reel, and 3 drafted social media post).
  • Act as a brand ambassador: post flyers, engage local outdoor shops and partners, and meet potential volunteers.
  • Share positive environmental messages in person and online.
  • Submit deliverables on time and aligned with our content guidelines (we’ll provide a toolkit).

Skills & Requirements

  • Expertise in content creation (with a professional camera or high quality camera phone) and storytelling through photography and short-form video.
  • Based in or able to spend at least 3 days/month in the project’s Eastern forest areas between mid-May and mid-August
  • Passion for forests, plant genetics, community participation, and the outdoors.
  • Confidence being on camera and engaging with people in person.
  • Ability to work independently in field conditions.
  • Stable internet connection for uploading files.

Extra Awesome Qualities

  • Knowledge of beech or butternut ecology
  • Previous involvement in conservation, forestry, or science communication

Location

Field-based in the Huntsville, AL/Chattanooga, TN area, or Evansville, IN/Louisville, KY, or Grand Rapids, MI, with remote reporting.

Compensation

3 month contract, $500 a month for the duration of the contract (May – August 2026)
