MacArthur Green is an independent and award-winning environmental consultancy, seeking a Field Ecologist and Field Ornithologist to join our diverse team. We specialise in providing ecology
and ornithology consultancy services to large-scale renewables, natural capital, and grid
network projects.

Employment Type: Full-time (permanent), part time working considered.

You must have a passion for working outdoors in any weather. You will often be lone working, so
you must be confident working independently. Survey work involves early starts some days, and
late finishes at other times, so you need to be flexible and enjoy variety in your working
week. Site locations often require surveyors to stay away during the week – accommodation and
subsistence expenses will be provided. You will carry out the following surveys:

The Field Ecologist will carry out the following surveys:

  • Protected species and habitat surveys
  • Peat depth and vegetation surveys
  • Bat surveys
  • Water quality monitoring

The Field Ornithologist will carry out the following surveys:

  • Flight activity surveys, breeding bird surveys, black grouse surveys
  • Breeding raptor and other Schedule 1 species surveys
  • Other specialist ornithological surveys as required

Both roles may assist with ecology and ornithology surveys (training will be provided
as necessary):

University qualifications are not necessary, but you must be able to demonstrate field
experience, with the following:

  • Experience of undertaking surveys and recording data accurately;
  • Experience of working in remote outdoor environments, and doing so on your own (including
    navigation using compass and OS maps);
  • Good ornithology and/or ecology ID skills;
  • Full UK driving license (manual driving essential, 4×4 experience ideal);
  • A flexible and proactive approach to work; and
  • Self-motivated and keen to learn.

Whilst these roles will focus on field work, there is potential to incorporate some
office-based work and progress to Consultant in future.

The following are not essential but would be beneficial to the role:

  • A working knowledge of guidance, legislation and policy in Scotland;
  • An understanding of the planning system in relation to environmental impact assessments;
    and
  • Strong IT skills including Word and Excel (experience of software such as ArcGIS/QGIS would
    be beneficial).

You must live within reasonable commuting distance of the Glasgow office to have access to the
4×4 and electric vehicles we provide to carry out survey work. Benefits include pension
contribution; bonus scheme; Life insurance; Income Protection and Critical Illness. 30 days
holiday per annum with unpaid holiday an option (subject to client commitments). We offer
enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption leave pay.

Aside from the above benefits, there are the advantages of working somewhere small and
friendly, where your opinion is sought and heard! We devote time and resource to supporting and
developing our team. We offer solid training and career development opportunities, monthly walk
and talk catch ups with your line manager, and annual appraisals; we will work with you to
develop your specialism and valuable sector knowledge.

Send your CV and covering letter, explaining (1) why you want to work for
MacArthur Green and (2) how your experience to date can be applied to this role, to: [email protected] (PDF documents are
preferred)

Closing date: 24th November, interviews w/c 4th December.
