Field Staff Member

In 1991, The C.R.E.W. got its start teaching teens how to work on backcountry trails in the Los Padres National Forest. Through hard work in the outdoors, crew members learned new skills, confidence, discipline, respect, and the value of a well-earned paycheck.

Today, C.R.E.W. members spend more than 11,000 hours in the field each year. Throughout Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, our trail work covers hundreds of front and backcountry miles. We perform fuel reduction and fire prevention for land conservation groups, municipal agencies, and homeowners. And we have a growing body of restoration projects that support healthy, biodiverse, and resilient lands.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Crew Members maintain backcountry trails, perform wildfire prevention and fuel reduction services, and work on habitat restoration in Ventura & Santa Barbara counties. Crew Members should be enthusiastic about working in the outdoors, learning new skills, and working with a variety of fellow staff members and community members.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• As part of a team, complete jobs for a variety of private and public landholders
• Be punctual and reliable
• Adhere to safety protocols
• Use of hand tools (e.g. Pulaskis, McLeods, shovels, hand saws) and power tools (e.g.weed whips, chainsaws – certification dependent)

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Minimum Age: 16 years old

Experience:

• No prior experience required
• Crew Members will learn relevant skills for each job type

Skills:

• Ability to work outdoors for 4-8 hours daily
• Ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
• Willingness to learn new skills and techniques
• Ability to work as a positive, helpful member of a team
• Ability to understand and enact written and verbal instructions

High school students will have a valid work permit on file.
