Field Technical Officer

We are seeking to appoint a Field Technical Officer in the Sustainable Marine Research Collaboration Agreement which is part of IMAS and the College of Sciences and Engineering (CoSE) ).

The role’s objective is to conduct field work on boats, aid in laboratory tasks, and perform fundamental computer-related activities. These responsibilities are crucial for the successful execution of a new project aimed at restoring the population of Tasmanian Sand Flathead.

What you’ll do:

• Undertake laboratory preparation of biological samples from fish, including recording measurements, preparation of otoliths for ageing, and image analysis.
• Collect and collate data under a strict experimental design.
• Use a range of software packages (e.g., Excel, Word, Outlook).
• Support safety and diversity in the workplace.
• Ensure a safe and clean working environment and maintain sampling equipment.

­What we’re looking for:

• B.Sc. with majors in relevant disciplines (e.g., marine biology) is desirable.
• Experience collecting fish using a range of fishing methods.
• A demonstrated understanding of sample collection under experimental design.
• Demonstrated significant experience with small boat handling and towing, a Coxswain Grade 2 certificate of competency, and a proven ability to work at sea for extended periods.
• Coxswain Grade 1 and Light Rigid vehicle licence is desirable.
• Excellent organisational skills and ability to work independently and in a team environment, including the ability to consider safety standards and policies as well as lead small team field trips.
• Current Australian drivers’ licence.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $99,698 comprising base salary within the range of $76,302 to $85,212 plus 17% superannuation.
