The opportunity

As Fieldwork Operations Lead within our Evidence workstream, you will provide waste composition
analysis services to public and private sector clients. This is an opportunity for an
experienced logistics professional to oversee field-based collection of robust waste
composition data which informs decision making in business and provides maximum impact for UK
policies on EPR reform, collection consistency and DRS. We are seeking a focused individual who
can support the company to further develop and streamline how this work area operates.

Reporting to the workstream lead, this is an exciting opportunity to join an enthusiastic,
goal-oriented and friendly team, where you will work alongside environmental consultants and
gain exposure to a range of diverse projects. You will have excellent logistics, administrative
and people skills, be practical-minded, and enjoy working in a busy office environment, with
room to thrive and grow in your role. The role also includes supporting the management of
Health and Safety across the wider company, providing the opportunity to work with teams across
the whole organisation.

What you will be doing

  • Oversee data gathering fieldwork to include:
    • Being the main point of contact and managing
      operational and project delivery queries directly with fieldwork site managers, being on site
      as and when required.
    • Fieldwork logistics, resourcing and operational planning and set-up.
    • Work
      closely with office-based project managers and clients to agree data collection plans and
      fieldwork site suitability, and provide necessary paperwork and required facilities for project
      delivery.
    • Undertaking regular site/remote work to develop fieldwork systems as appropriate
      (includes working on data collection projects and waste analysis).
    • Responsible for health and
      safety standards and planning for all fieldwork, with support from the health and safety
      advisor. You will hold a NEBOSH general certificate.
    • Oversight of agency staff engaged on data
      processing and analysis.
    • Maintaining queries and solutions logs, for quality control and process
      improvement.
  • Development of fieldwork team databases and other systems and oversee effective
    communications and updates to fieldwork team
  • You will manage the project officer to;
    • Ensure sufficient stocks of equipment and
      consumables, ensuring levels are adequate for requirements, and maintenance certificates are
      updated as appropriate.
    • Ensure regular maintenance schedules for stored equipment and company
      vehicles with accurate records of movements of equipment (to include manual
      handling).
    • Effectively manage operations systems and share regular updates on progress and
      development actions with the wider team and workstream lead.
  • As line manager to the operations and projects officer, oversee and grow their role, drive
    and support learning and development.
  • Lead and work closely with workstream lead and consultants to develop fieldwork processes,
    use of storage facilities and other premises.
  • Support the workstream lead and work closely with our finance department to analyse current
    operating costs, maximise efficiency and drive improvements.
  • Lead and support the workstream lead to develop efficient systems for data recording and
    processing, new partnerships and services (e.g., digital waste identification) and effective
    training of fieldwork operatives.
  • Health and safety management across the company, working to maintain and develop risk
    assessments and company safe systems for all roles and projects.
  • Drive 3.5 tonne long-wheeled base transit vans as required.

The essentials

  • NEBOSH general certificate in occupational health and safety.
  • First Aid at Work Certificate.
  • Experience of developing risk assessment and safe systems of work.
  • Current full UK driving licence to be able to drive a 3.5 tonne long-wheeled base transit
    van.
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, or equivalent training or experience.
  • At least 12 months experience in a similar or relevant role.
  • Excellent organisation skills with an ability to problem solve, prioritise, plan and work
    under pressure.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team.
  • High level of numeracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to synthesise information from a variety of sources.
  • Experience of managing staffing rotas or booking resources for work.
  • Experience of managing equipment stocks and supplier relationships.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people.
  • Good IT skills including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Availability and willingness to work evenings / weekends when required – you will be paid
    or receive time back for pre-arranged on-call hours.
  • Willingness and ability to be hands on and carry out manual tasks, such as moving,
    repairing and organising equipment for site work.
  • Achievement oriented and interested in learning new skills.
  • Enthusiastic and proactive.
  • Interest in and understanding of recycling, resource efficiency and wider sustainability
    issues.

Great to haves

  • Postgraduate degree or research experience in a relevant subject.
  • Knowledge of field-based data collection methods and techniques.
  • Experience in the recycling, resource efficiency or sustainability sector.
  • Experience of driving larger vehicles such as long wheel-based van.
  • Experience in an administrative or logistics role.
  • Ability to carry out minor repairs and maintenance of equipment.
  • Experience using Microsoft Access.
  • Higher level First Aid Qualifications.
  • NEBOSH Diploma
