Who are we looking for?

CARE Germany is implementing a multi-year consortium project (CBA-SCALE Southern Africa+) on community-based adaptation to climate change in Southern Africa, funded by the International Climate Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV/IKI). We are looking for a Finance Manager for this consortium project. In this role, you will be responsible for the overall financial management of the consortium project and work closely with the financial officers of the partner organisations. You will also be responsible for high-quality and timely financial reporting.

Your tasks

  • You enjoy controlling and are independently responsible for the finances of the consortium project.
  • You will support the consortium manager in the financial and operational management of the consortium project and advise the senior management of CARE Germany on financial management and budget-related decisions.
  • You will support and supervise the annual budget planning as well as adjustments and forecasts. You will support the consortium manager in the preparation of change requests to the donor BMUV/IKI.
  • You will monitor the utilisation of the BMUV/IKI grant, CARE Germany’s own funds and other third-party funds, as well as income and expenditure as part of project planning (including liquidity planning).
  • During project implementation, you will ensure the application of the relevant financial and accounting guidelines (including grant law compliance) and develop financial guidelines and reporting formats based on these.
  • You will prepare financial reports for the donor BMUV/IKI and check the accuracy of the quarterly reports of the partner organisations.
  • You will prepare fund requests to the donor BMUV/IKI and check the fund requests of the partner organisations.
  • You will prepare audits in collaboration with the consortium manager and support their implementation.
  • You will provide the finance department of CARE Germany with the relevant project financial information for the preparation of the annual financial statements.
  • You will serve as the first point of contact for the finance officers of the partner organisation for all questions relating to financial management, controlling and financial reporting.
  • You will play an important liaison role between the finance officers of the partner organisations and CARE Germany.
  • You will regularly train the finance officers of the partner organisations. You will create the necessary training materials and conduct the training sessions virtually and on site.
  • You will achieve your goals without disciplinary responsibility, but through professional expertise, strong negotiating skills and a high level of intercultural appreciation.

Your profile / requirements

  • Completed university degree in economics with a focus on business administration, controlling or a completed commercial vocational training with several years of relevant professional experience
  • Several years of professional experience with good business management skills and knowledge of financial management and controlling
  • Professional experience and proven knowledge in the management, accounting and reporting of public funds
  • Good knowledge of German funding law (including BHO, ANBest-P, BNBest-P)
  • Knowledge of the management of international development cooperation and/or humanitarian aid projects
  • Very good organisational skills and a structured way of working
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills as well as a high level of commitment and interest in working in international teams
  • Confident use of common IT applications such as Microsoft 365 and accounting software (experience with PeopleSoft is an advantage)
  • Very good written and spoken German and English (at least B2 level)
  • Residence and work permit in Germany is required
  • Willingness to travel internationally (tropical fitness is required)
