About the College

Located on a beautiful 136 acre property in the Yarra Valley (60 kilometres from the Melbourne CBD), Worawa Aboriginal College is a boarding school for Aboriginal girls in their secondary years of schooling. An Aboriginal initiative, Worawa is an Independent school, owned and governed by Aboriginal people, and operates on a philosophy of ‘Walking Together to Make a Difference’.

A full boarding school, Worawa was established as a response to the needs of Aboriginal adolescents and the difficulties these young people experience in the mainstream educational system. The diversity of Aboriginal Australia is reflected in the student population drawn from communities across the country. Worawa provides a holistic education based on an integrated Education, Culture, and Wellbeing model.

This position requires the incumbent to embrace the Worawa ethos of Aboriginal values, Aboriginal led decision making and the right to Aboriginal self-determination.

The Role

A full time role reporting to the Executive Director and Principal, the Finance Manager is responsible for managing the overall finance function of the College. This role has one direct report, who is responsible for accounts payable, receivable and payroll.

The Finance Manager forms part of the administration team and contributes to the strategic planning of the College finances. This role is also responsible for reconciliations, budgeting, financial reporting, asset management, funding and grant applications and liaising with suppliers to negotiate terms and pricing in contractual arrangements.

The successful candidate must have:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Management or Commerce.
  • Extensive experience in accounting or similar work related experience.
  • Knowledge of financial and management accounting fundamentals and asset management principles.
  • High level of exposure and comfort with a variety of software systems including but not limited to Accounting such as Xero, Employment Hero Payroll and HR, Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership position, ability to think and plan strategically, form and carry out action plans and evaluate outcomes.
  • Sound administration and reporting skills and ability to meet required deadlines.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills with the ability to lead by example and delegate effectively.
  • Ability to work in a co-led model with Aboriginal people demonstrating an ability to develop functional working relationships with the breadth of staff at Worawa.
  • Current Working with Children Check and Police Check.

Desirable:

  • Professional accounting or finance designation or certification such as CPA or ICA preferred.
  • Previous operational experience in a school, or not for profit organisation would be highly regarded.
  • Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training
  • Experience working with the Aboriginal community and a demonstrated understanding and knowledge of the diversity of Aboriginal cultures and issues affecting the Aboriginal community
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are strongly encouraged to apply
