Financial Aid Counselor

Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary

The Financial Aid Counselor Is a primary point of contact for students and families that are seeking assistance with the educational expenses of attending Tulane University.

Responsibilities Include the processing of financial aid applications from initial needs analysis to packaging of offers of assistance; counseling with students regarding all student loans, scholarships, grants, and employment programs ;Interpreting rationale behind student budgets, need analysis computations and all program regulations; and assisting in the monitoring of aid eligibility and academic progress requirements. Each Financial Aid Counselor Is also assigned responsibility for the initiation, execution, and analysis of a number of special projects. These tasks may include: creating and designing publications, editing and producing presentations including a web page, planning special events both on and off campus, serving as liaison with several university departments, serving on university committees, supervising operations staff and student employees on specific projects, and serving as a point of contact for the university to outside agencies.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills and excellent attention to detail are necessary
  • Must have an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and possess superior interpersonal skills; and thorough personal computer experience
  • Must have strong customer service orientation and ability to impart those skills to members of the staff
  • Flexibility to handle a variety of duties and projects throughout the year, as the demands of a Financial Aid Office are cyclical in nature
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including students, parents, faculty, academic deans and administrators, guidance counselors, alumni, government representatives, banks, loan servicing agencies, and loan guarantee agencies
  • Must have a thorough understanding of federal Title IV aid regulations
  • Computer literacy is important to the efficient management of a quantity of work
  • Demonstrates Integrity and trustworthy in the workplace
  • Exhibits commitment to teamwork, positive energy and standards of excellence in every task

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience or educational training in student affairs, counseling, accounting, or related fields for those holding a bachelor’s degree
  • Ten (10) years of experience or educational training in financial aid counseling for those holding only a high school diploma/equivalent
