The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Wildland Fire Management Division – Fire District Assistance Program as a Fire District Assistance Specialist. The main purpose of the Fire District Assistance program is to provide local and rural Fire Districts/Departments, within Washington State opportunities to establish, develop, improve, and maintain their Wildland Firefighting suppression capabilities. Our program has a continuing mission to improve the abilities of Fire Districts/Departments assisting with the defense of Washington State lands suppression efforts across the 13 million acres of private, state, and tribal-owned forestlands.

Responsibilities:

  • Wildland Acquisition Activities – Federal Government Surplus Equipment
  • Wildland Acquisition Activities – Federal Government Surplus Equipment Inventory Management
  • Federal and State Grant Administration, Agreements, and Training

Required Qualifications: 

  • Associate’s degree in a natural resources-related field AND four years of related experience in natural resources, property management, or emergency management.
    OR An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Two years of experience implementing a wildland fire program (e.g. prevention, suppression, training, technical or financial support).
  • Organization skills sufficient to schedule work on multiple projects to ensure deliverables can be met on time.
  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in meeting deliverables.
  • Ability to work with diverse interests to identify and achieve common goals.
  • Proficient computer skills using Microsoft Office Suite and managing database information.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Commitment to fostering and supporting an environment that honors diversity, equity, inclusion, and environmental justice practices.
  • Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and public records retention and requests are followed.
