The Office of the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer (OCNMO) is the Queensland Government’s principal advisor on all matters relating to nursing and midwifery services with a particular authority and expertise in advancing, leading and advising on matters that promote a healthier Queensland.
OCNMO is committed to promoting efforts to support Closing the Gap and delivering improved health outcomes with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As such, OCNMO leads the implementation of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander maternity services strategy, Growing Deadly Families, which aims to ensure every woman in Queensland giving birth to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander babies has access to high quality, clinical and culturally capable maternity services.
OCNMO is also committed to supporting efforts to achieve health equity in alignment with Queensland’s health equity agenda and new legislation requiring Hospital and Health Services co-develop and co-implement Health Equity Strategies.
The role
Reporting to the Chief Midwife, you will be individually accountable for professional standards, aligning practices with the strategic directions of the Chief Nursing and Chief Midwife Officers.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing strategic leadership for First Nations programs, leading workforce planning, and ensuring continuous improvement in First Nations maternity and midwifery strategies.
- Coordination and ongoing implementation, governance and expansion of the Growing Deadly Families Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Maternity Services Strategy 2019- 2025 (GDF Strategy) and other priority government initiatives.
- Developing and maintaining productive partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Health Services (ATSICCHS) and other key internal and external stakeholders.

About you:
To be successful in this role you will:
- Have comprehensive knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health issues and priorities at a national and state level, an understanding of the implications for policy, service delivery and workforce.
- Have comprehensive knowledge of professional midwifery issues and contemporary direction at a national and state level.
- Demonstrate the ability to think strategically, develop and implement policy and engage with internal and external stakeholders to improve maternal and child outcomes and increase the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander midwifery workforce.
- Demonstrate advanced leadership conceptual and analytical skills.
- Have experience in quality and safety, midwifery governance, health/ program management, policy development and/or professional education and training.
Mandatory qualifications and other requirements:
- This position requires proof of qualification and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) as a Midwife appearing on the AHPRA register of practitioners.
- A post graduate qualification and Rural and remote experience is highly desirable.
- Travel within Queensland and inter-state may be required occasionally for this role.
