Sea lamprey are an invasive species to the Great Lakes with each adult sea lamprey capable of killing up to 40 lbs. of fish in its lifetime. As an agent of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is tasked with the control of sea lamprey populations to protect the Great Lakes fishery which is valued at $7 billion. Work tasks will take you throughout the Great Lakes in the U.S. and Canada as a team member supporting the mission of both the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Great Lakes Fishery Commission. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking an energetic fish biologist to join the Sea Lamprey Control Program’s Alternative Control and Evaluation Unit. This team focuses on a diverse set of projects including assessing adult sea lamprey populations in the Great Lakes, maintaining a vast network of barriers to sea lamprey migration, and deploying sea lamprey control tools that supplement or are alternative to traditional lampricide applications. In this position you will collaborate with multiple partner agencies and researchers to continue advancing the Sea Lamprey Control Program. There will be opportunities to think creatively, develop partnerships, and become a leader within the Sea Lamprey Control Program. Experience with river geomorphology, fish population assessment, fabrication/construction/engineering, statistics, environmental policy/permitting, or project management is desired.
