Fish Ecologist

We are currently recruiting for a Fish Ecologist to work with the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory to analyze available fisheries hydro-acoustics data collected in SE Lake Michigan during our nearshore to offshore surveys of the pelagic food web during warm (2016, 2018), cold (2014, 2019), and average (2011, 2013) temperature years as classified by average maximum surface temperature and average ice cover. Analysis of such data will inform current and future model analysis of expected changes in lake temperatures and consequent changes in phenology of the lake’s production cycle, with consequent changes in seasonal distributions and relative abundances of fishes and their prey.

This is a one-year contract anticipated to start October 1, 2024 and end September 30, 2025. Work can be performed remotely, but travel may be required for meetings.

Scope of Work:

• Q1 & Q2: Review and clean fisheries hydroacoustics data.
• Q1 & Q2: Review R scripts for processing and mapping acoustics data, and revise as necessary.
• Q2 & Q3: Apply published target-strength fish length relationships to estimate relative density and biomass
• of fish from hydroacoustics data collected along nearshore to offshore transect in SE Lake Michigan
• Q3 & Q4: Map relative density and biomass of fish by season and year for predetermined categories of
• depth and distance from shore.
• Q4: Write and submit final report summarizing analysis of fish hydroacoustics data over seasons and years
• relative to baseline and climate scenarios.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in marine biology, ecology, or similar.
• Experience and expertise in analyzing data on spatial distributions of Great Lakes fishes.
• Experience in food web modeling and statistics, fish bioenergetics, and some experience with R Studio software.
• Preference given to individuals with experience analyzing fish acoustics data.

Salary range is $30-$35/hr. Medical insurance, Holiday, PTO, Sick pay, and 401K are also offered
