Perform scientific, technical, and maintenance duties at Kalama Falls Hatchery and trap sites within the complex, and rear anadromous species of fish.

Depending on which level you are hired at, your salary range will be as follows:

Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 – $3,145 – $4,174

Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 – $3,454 – $4,602

Picture yourself, 

Scanning fish for various tags using equipment such as a coded wire tag (CWT) wand, and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tag detector.

In this dynamic role, 

You will monitor fish behavior and health by tracking temperature units (TU’s) to monitor egg development and calibrate formalin systems based on flows.

With your hand and power tool experience, 

Operate forklifts, tractors, yard maintenance equipment, fish pumps and common power tools.

We are seeking a candidate,

Duties:

Some of what our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 will enjoy doing, 

Fish culture: 

  • Calculate and feed fish according to pond populations and weight samples. Adjust feed size and amount fed as needed.
  • Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution.
  • Clean ponds, raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Perform fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer and plant inventories.
  • Identify and sort all adult salmonids by species, gender, stock and condition of maturity when trapping and spawning.
  • Fertilize eggs with milt, according to pre-determined rations using established spawning protocols and HGMP requirements.
  • Incubate eggs using a variety of vessels including shallow throughs, isolation buckets, upwelling incubators and vertical trays.
  • Monitor dissolved oxygen levels to maintain proper carrying capacity of rearing units.
  • Understand safety protocols for all hazardous chemicals and drugs used for all treatments and chemical storage and handling.
  • Operate commercial transport vehicles. Ensures vehicle is in working order by performing pre-trip inspections and reports needed repairs.
  • Load truck according to safe hauling densities, utilizes proper oxygen levels and monitors fish during transport.

Record keeping and reporting:

  • Proficient use of computers and software to perform various aspects of hatchery work, including data entry, record keeping, and reporting both within and outside the agency.
  • Accurately fills out and submits Agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice forms and other relevant forms.
  • Perform water quality analysis and discharge monitoring reports (DMR) as required by the Department of Ecology to maintain hatchery discharge permits (NPDES).

Operation and maintenance of the facility and equipment:

  • Monitor and maintain facility support systems such as diesel generators, domestic and ozone water treatment plants, water supply pumps, alarm panels and other support systems.
  • Perform maintenance duties in and around the hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment.
  • Wear and use employee safety equipment as directed as well as inspect, clean, and repair safety equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Will work outside in inclement weather conditions, walk on rivers, through trees/brush to perform gill netting, seining, gaffing.
    • Walk, climb, lift, and perform strenuous physical activities including frequently carrying or moving 50 pounds (may include items such as fish food, building materials, and large hoses). 
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
    • Work in an office environment when the work requires it.
  • Schedule:
    • Typically, Saturday – Friday, 8:00 A.M. – 5:00 P.M.   
    • The work hours can vary at different times of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.
  • Standby:
    • If housing becomes available, standby will be required. Standby requires the employee to be responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining 16 hours of the day. While on standby this position will work 10 days and be of 4.
  • Housing: 
    • Housing is not currently provided. 
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel may be required to accomplish agency goals. 
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Hand and power tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, various saws, water sampling instruments, transport trucks, passenger vehicles, adult and juvenile fish pumps, fish counters, coded-wire tag (CWT) detection equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engines, computers, and software.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Communicate effectively with the public, volunteers and small community groups on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • This Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities for candidates with limited hatchery and fish culture experience. 
  • Candidates will be hired as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2, dependent on skills and experience.
  • Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1

  • Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

OR

  • An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field.

OR

  • Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or a closely allied field.

OR

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (Goal Class):

  • One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 AND successful completion of agency supervised training program.

OR

  • Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR

  • Two (2) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

OR

  • Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Please Note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

  • A valid Class “B” commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement and airbrakes or the ability to obtain a license upon six (6) months employment. CDL school will be provided. 
  • This position requires standby once housing is available.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

  • Two (2) or four (4) year degree in fisheries of closely associated field.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Valid Washington State pesticide applicator’s license.
