Perform scientific, technical, and maintenance duties at Naselle Hatchery and trap sites within the complex, and rear anadromous species of fish.

Depending on which level you are hired at, your salary range will be as follows:

Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 – $3,145 – $4,174

Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 – $3,454 – $4,602

 

With that in mind, 

Picture yourself cleaning ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.

With your experience you will identify marked adults, collect tags/marks for biological sampling, and record data.

Duties

Some of what our Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 will enjoy doing, 

Fish culture: 

• Calculate and feed fish according to pond populations and weight samples. Adjust feed size and amount fed as needed.
• Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution.
• Clean ponds, raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
• Perform fish inventories, splits, grading, marking trailer and plant inventories.
• Identify and sort all adult salmonids by species, gender, stock and condition of maturity when trapping and spawning.
• Fertilize eggs with milt, according to pre-determined rations using established spawning protocols and HGMP requirements.
• Incubate eggs using a variety of vessels including shallow throughs, isolation buckets, upwelling incubators and vertical trays.
• Monitor dissolved oxygen levels to maintain proper carrying capacity of rearing units.
• Understand safety protocols for all hazardous chemicals and drugs used for all treatments and chemical storage and handling.
• Operate commercial transport vehicles. Ensures vehicle is in working order by performing pre-trip inspections and reports needed repairs.
• Load truck according to safe hauling densities, utilizes proper oxygen levels and monitors fish during transport.

Record keeping and reporting:

• Proficient use of computers and software to perform various aspects of hatchery work, including data entry, record keeping, and reporting both within and outside the agency.
• Accurately fills out and submits Agency forms such as fish transfer tickets, hatchery invoice forms and other relevant forms.
• Perform water quality analysis and discharge monitoring reports (DMR) as required by the Department of Ecology to maintain hatchery discharge permits (NPDES).

Operation and maintenance of the facility and equipment:

• Monitor and maintain facility support systems such as diesel generators, domestic and ozone water treatment plants, water supply pumps, alarm panels and other support systems.
• Perform maintenance duties in and around the hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment.
• Wear and use employee safety equipment as directed as well as inspect, clean, and repair safety equipment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

• Work Setting, including hazards:
  • Work is performed outside in all weather conditions whether it is raining, snowing, sunny, dark, cold or hot.
  • Typically the employee in this position will be working outside about 250 days a year. At times this position will be required to repetitively life at least 50lbs.
  • Employee will work with various chemicals used at facility (utilizing proper PPE).
  • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Perform strenuous physical activities.
• Schedule:
  • 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday; the work hours can vary greatly at different time of the year depending on the work schedule and weather conditions.
• Standby:
  • Standby duties are not currently assigned – standby entails the employee being responsible for overseeing the facility for the remaining sixteen (16) hours of the day after the regular eight (8) hour shift. While on standby this position will work ten (10) days on and be off four (4) days.
  • All applicants applying for this position should understand that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series.
  • Management may determine it is necessary to assign standby in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position.
• Housing:  
  • Housing is not provided.
• Travel Requirements:
  • Travel is required within the complex as needed.
• Tools and Equipment:
  • Employee will work with hand & power tools, lawn care equipment, tractors, forklifts, welding equipment, egg picking machines, water sampling instruments, transport trucks, passenger vehicles, adult fish pumps, adult fish counters, CWT identification equipment, trash pumps, pressure washers, diesel generators, small gas engine, computers, and software.
• Customer Interactions:
  • Communication with public and volunteers
  • Employee will interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

This Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (In-Training) series provides mentoring and career development opportunities for candidates with limited hatchery and fish culture experience. 

Candidates will be hired as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 or 2, dependent on skills and experience.

Upon satisfactory completion of the 12-month in-training plan, the selected candidate will automatically be promoted to a Fish Hatchery Specialist 2.

 

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 1:

• Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

           OR

• An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology, or a closely allied field.

           OR

• Three (3) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or a closely allied field.

           OR

• Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school.

 

Required Qualifications for the Fish Hatchery Specialist 2 (Goal Class):

• One (1) year of experience as a Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 AND successful completion of agency supervised training program.

           OR

• Associate’s degree in fisheries technology, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

           OR

• Two (2) years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, biology or closely allied field AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

           OR

• Successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school AND one (1) year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery.

Please Note: Three (3) years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.

Certifications/Licenses: 

• Valid Driver’s License.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following:

• Two (2) or four (4) year degree in fisheries of closely associated field.
