Port Angeles, Washington – Clallam County

Anticipated Appointment Length: 4 Months
July 1, 2024 – October 31, 2024

Perform scientific, technical, and related maintenance duties at hatchery facilities, trap sites, and acclimation ponds within the complex.

Provide sustainable fish and wildlife recreational opportunities in the state of Washington by supporting conservation!

Duties:

Here is what you will be doing, 

Fish Culture: 

  • Feeds fish according to feed sheet and direction from FHS 3 & FHS 2
  • Monitors egg and fish production
  • Assists in identifying, sorting, and sampling species for spawning and adult distribution.
  • Cleans ponds and raceways, troughs, and incubator systems to maintain fish health.
  • Assist in identifying marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling.
  • Assist in inventorying and grading fish populations, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants.
  • Picks eggs loss by hand or using equipment.

Operation and Maintenance of Facility and Equipment: 

  • Maintains proper water flow and rearing environments as directed by FHS’s.
  • Actively identifies safety hazards and reports problems to FHS’s.
  • Perform maintenance duties in and around hatchery and residences to preserve a clean and safe working environment as directed.
  • Responds to hatchery alarms, determining and taking appropriate corrective actions.
  • Service and maintain small gas engines and hatchery related equipment or structures.

Record Keeping and Reporting:

  • Use of computers and software in order to perform various aspects of hatchery work
  • Record daily feed, mortalities in rearing units, water temperatures and other hatchery related data.
  • Reports changes in fish behavior and rearing environments to supervisors.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work is performed outside in all weather conditions, and the employee will be working outside about 250 days a year.
    • Work includes  strenuous physical activities, including repetitively lifting at least 50lbs.
    • Respirators and other PPE are worn while working with various chemicals used at facility.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Typical work schedule is 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, 10 days on/4 days off (including days, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed) but can vary depending on workload and weather conditions.
    • Position may also be approved to work Monday – Friday (8 hour shifts) or four ten-hour shifts pending supervisor approval.
    • May occasionally require travel and work more than 40 hours per week to meet seasonal workload demands throughout the complex as needed.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Travel as needed within complex to meet work demands.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Table saw, miter saw, skill saw, chainsaw, reciprocating saw, drills, weed eater, lawn mowers, Tractor, leaf blower, hand powered sprayers, gas & electric pumps, welders, pressure washer, generators, hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, hand saws, pruners, shovels, rakes.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Communicate effectively with public and volunteers.
    • Employee will interact with small community groups and individual constituents on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

GED or High School diploma.

License: Valid driver’s license.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to those required qualifications, our ideal applicant will also have some or all of the following: 

Six (6) months of experience working at a fish hatchery.
