we are looking for someone with practical experience in fisheries to help us deliver some of
our ground-breaking work.

Position Overview: We are seeking a self-motivated person to join our team.
Ideally with 5+ years of relevant experience. The Fisheries Scientist role will lead on the
practical delivery of our fisheries projects by working closely with the fishing industry both
domestically and internationally. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator
with a passion for working in and improving the sustainability of the fishing industry. There
will be opportunities for international travel.

Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: 

Fisheries Scientist

  • Establishing and maintaining good relations with the fishing industry domestically and
    internationally
  • Undertaking experiments at our tank facilities to refine product design.
  • Working closely with our Grants and Projects Manager to facilitate the delivery of existing
    projects.
  • Planning and undertaking sampling trips onboard commercial fishing vessels in the UK and
    occasionally overseas.
  • Carrying out catch sampling at sea, during normal commercial practice to measure the
    effectiveness of our bycatch technologies.
  • Entering data into databases, data checking and QC and timely delivery of data to end users
  • Contributing to production of reports
  • Contributing to sales and marketing of Fishtek Products.

Person qualifications/specification

  • 5+ years relevant work experience.
  • A good Degree or MSc qualification.
  • Experience of working at sea.
  • Knowledge of fishing vessels and/or gear types.
  • Willingness and ability to work flexibly at unsociable hours, in challenging weather and
    environmental conditions, and without supervision.
  • Ability to conduct physical and precise scientific fieldwork at sea and on land with
    good attention to detail.
  • Good IT skills, experience of data entry into databases and undertaking data quality
    assurance checks.
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills.
  • Full driving licence (valid for driving in the UK).
