Position Description:

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (Council) is seeking candidates for the position of Fishery Management Specialist. This is an exciting, interdisciplinary position working at the intersection of both fisheries management and science. The Fishery Management Specialist will work with diverse teams of scientists, managers, commercial and recreational fishery stakeholders, and others to develop solutions to a number of challenges associated with fisheries in the Mid-Atlantic region. This position will involve coordination and participation in a wide range of programs and projects in support of the Council’s management goals.

The Council is responsible for the management of fisheries in federal waters in the Mid-Atlantic region (New York to North Carolina). The Council is committed to the stewardship of these fisheries, and associated ecosystems and fishing communities, through the collaborative development of effective, science-based fishery management plans and policies. Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

• Conducting quantitative and policy analyses to provide advice related to management options under consideration by the Council;
• Developing documents that summarize complex information and demonstrate compliance with applicable federal statutes;
• Presenting the results of analyses to the Council, its committees, and the public;
• Working with, and sometimes leading, multidisciplinary, multi-agency groups to address a number of cross-cutting fishery management issues related to data improvement, stock assessments, climate change, and habitat conservation;
• Acting as a spokesperson for Council staff in discussions with the Council, Council’s committees, and the public on matters relating to proposed fishery management regulations;

Work Environment:

The Council office is located in Dover, Delaware, uniquely positioned with easy access to the Delaware beaches, Philadelphia, Annapolis, Baltimore, and Washington D.C.  The daily work environment will include working at a desk in an office setting, with potential opportunities for flexible/hybrid work. This position requires travel to attend Council and other related meetings. Travel average 2-5 days per month, generally in the area from Massachusetts to North Carolina.

Desired Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or equivalent in marine, estuarine, or environmental sciences, fisheries or marine ecology, natural resource economics, policy/policy analysis, or other related discipline.
• Experience with quantitative and qualitative analyses.
• Ability to effectively summarize and communicate technical information to diverse technical and non-technical audiences, including a strong ability to write clearly and succinctly.
• Ability to work collaboratively with small teams including facilitating group decision making and problem solving.
• Skilled in managing multiple projects simultaneously with strong organizational skills.
• Knowledge of U.S. fishery management institutions and relevant federal laws, primarily the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the Endangered Species Act.

Salary & Benefits:

The starting salary range for this position is $70,000 – $82,000, depending on prior experience. The Council offers a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental and vision insurance, life insurance, annual (vacation) and sick leave, parental leave, and a 401K matching retirement program. Professional development is actively encouraged and supported by the Council.  Relocation expenses may be authorized.

Terms of Employment:

Upon hiring, the selected applicant will enter an initial probationary period of one year during which the individual’s performance will be evaluated by the Executive Director. Unsatisfactory performance, and/or failure to demonstrate the skills required for this position, may result in termination of employment at the end of the probationary period.
