FAO’s Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SFS) is responsible for developing, promoting, overseeing and implementing agreed strategies for addressing subregional food, agriculture and rural development priorities. It develops and maintains relations with subregion-wide institutions including Regional Economic Integration Organizations (REIOs). The Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SFS) is a subsidiary of the Regional Office for Africa (RAF).

The position is located in the Subregional Office for Southern Africa (SFS) in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Reporting Lines
The Fishery Officer reports to the Fisheries Officer (Secretary, South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Commission – SWIOFC), SFS.

Key Results:

Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.

Key Functions:

  • Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects as well as products and services.
  • Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.
  • Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.
  • Updates databases and web pages.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.
  • Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.
  • Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

Specific Functions:

  • Contributes to the implementation, in Southern Africa, of global standards set under the umbrella of the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (CCRF).
  • Contributes to the development of policies and strategies of the program activities in the fisheries and aquaculture sector, consistent with the FAO Blue Transformation Roadmap.
  • Provides technical input for developing fisheries and aquaculture value addition related project proposals and conducts analyses in support of the fisheries and aquaculture activities for reporting.
  • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities aimed at member countries such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials and on-line tools. 
  • Provides support, as required and appropriate, to FAO implementing partners.
  • Ensures timely dissemination of required information to the donor community, UN agencies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), national authorities and all partners in support to the fisheries sector.
  • Supports resource mobilization activities in line with FAO’s Corporate Strategy.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Candidates Will Be Assessed Against The Following:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Advanced university degree in fisheries, aquaculture, natural resource development or other relevant marine or aquatic sciences, with a specialization in fisheries and aquaculture governance, management, development, economics, or related fields.
  • Three years of relevant experience in one of the following: fisheries/ aquaculture management, development  or governance;  statistics or data collection systems of aquatic resources; trade, safety and quality or development of aquatic foods. 
  • Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English and limited knowledge (intermediate – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).
