The Fisheries and Aquaculture Division (NFI) is responsible for all programmes and activities related to fisheries and aquaculture and their sustainable development, with particular emphasis on human well-being, food security and poverty reduction; sustained production systems including through the protection of the environment and preservation of biodiversity and the promotion of responsible fishing practices; post-harvest utilization, marketing and trade with due regard to food security and the well-being of fishing communities; collection, compilation, validation, trend analysis and dissemination of the best available and up-to-date fishery statistics and for the syndication of the FAO information on all aspects of world fisheries and aquaculture.

 

The post is located at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy in the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division’s (NFI) Fishery Information and Knowledge Management Team (NFISI), which holds the responsibility for fulfilling the functions of supporting web-based information dissemination, communication and outreach, fisheries information systems, data management and digital innovation and supporting information partnerships such as the Fisheries and Resources Monitoring System (FIRMS) and the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA).

 

 

 

 

Reporting Lines

 

The Fishery Officer (Information/Webmaster) reports to the Senior Fishery Officer/Team Leader, NFISI.

 

 

 

 

Technical Focus

 

Technical editing/webmaster for web-based information dissemination; information metadata; subject, taxonomic and geographic indexing; international collaborative information systems; fisheries, aquaculture and aquatic science and policy information.

 

 

 

 

Key Results

 

Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects, products and services.

 

 

 

 

Key Functions

 

•       Collects and analyses relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information, data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects as well as products and services.

 

•       Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents.

 

•       Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems.

 

•       Updates databases and web pages.

 

•       Participates in multidisciplinary project/work teams.

 

•       Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.

 

•       Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners.

 

 

 

 

Specific Functions

 

•       Acts as focal point for web content and technical editing for NFI websites, in collaboration with the OCC/NFI Communication Coordinator (Office of Communications/Fisheries and Aquaculture Division) ensuring access to up-to-date content, supporting communication with regular alignment of content and information architecture and overseeing the maintenance of sub-site components.

 

•       Ensures dissemination of news items, meeting documents, publications and coherent dissemination across various FAO information systems.

 

•       Monitors proper functioning of web services delivered through websites and coordinates/oversees the necessary modifications and technical improvements to these services, through interaction with relevant staff and ensuring compliance with FAO standards and policies.

 

•       Supports regular development, revamping or migration projects of websites, archiving or recycling of knowledge assets of phased-out sites, including providing technical contributions to their governance body.

 

•       Contributes to impact evaluation of web-based disseminated resources, through web trend extractions and analyses (including altmetric) for individual publications and websites, and reports to management.

•       Supports the development of communication and outreach material in close consultation with team/project leaders and the OCC/NFI Communication Coordinator, addressing technical issues related to web-based communication, formatting, processing and dispatching programmatic newsletter.

 

•       Contributes to the creation, management, enrichment of internet based collaborative platforms and social media, including through further development of the tutorials and training material.

Minimum Requirements

 

•       Advanced university degree in biology, aquatic and/or fishery sciences, library-information sciences, or related field.

 

•       Three years of relevant experience in reviewing and editing fisheries and aquaculture documentation and scientific web-based information, in fisheries information management and fishery information system.

 

•       Working knowledge (full proficiency – level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Technical/Functional Skills

 

•       Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is desirable.

 

•       Extent and relevance of experience in web-based technical editing and ability to prepare documents for communication.

 

•       Extent and relevance of experience and knowledge regarding data, statistics and information used to support aquatic sciences and policies in fisheries and aquaculture.

 

•       Extent and relevance of experience in the use of database management systems, web-publishing and design tools, and internet-based media outreach tools, including FAO corporate tools and policies (e.g. HTML, XML, Adobe DC tools, PWS 3.0, corporate CMS, SharePoint and social media platforms – Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Slideshare, Facebook, Vevo).

 

•       Extent and relevance of experience in project planning, monitoring and in collaborative work.
